It’s said that everyone has one great true love in their life. James Dean was no exception. While people continue to debate his sexual preference, it’s a given that his heart belonged completely to one beautiful young woman, Pier Angeli.
Pier Angeli was an Italian actress who James met while he was filming “East of Eden”. She was filming on the lot next to him, and they were attracted to one another instantly. However, her overly domineering mother disapproved (most believed the chief reason was because he wasn’t Catholic). In 1954 Pier told James that she was going to marry singer, Vic Damone. Apparently, her mother found the man she approved of and in the Mom vs. James Dean battle, also found victory.
On the wedding day, guests could hardly hear the wedding vows above the noise outside. “Someone” was revving his motorcycle outside of the church. Of course, the someone was a heartbroken James Dean.
The following year, James Dean died in the now infamous car wreck.
Pier and Vic’s marriage ended messily four years later. Tragically, Pier Angeli committed suicide in 1971. Shortly before her death she named the “one man” she’d ever loved – James Dean.
“For better or for worse, I’m going to spend the rest of my days with her. (Pier) – James Dean.”
