As much as I love TV Land, they let me down big time when they removed Lucy, Ricky, Ethel, and Fred from their daily lineup. Fortunately they still provide a home for other favorites like Beverly Hillbillies, Good Times, and Andy Griffith. But no Lucy?!?!

No wonder dvds are so incredibly popular, eh? But, even so, I have to be honest – there’s a certain something special about watching our favorite episodes the way they were meant to be watched, as a television program. For one thing, I love the unexpected reveal of which episode it is. I’ve seen these shows so often, I love to test myself and see how fast I can identify the episode. With I Love Lucy and Andy Griffith, I’m so quick I usually get it right off the bat.

I also love the effect of commercials – they provide an opportunity to refill your coffee, grab more snacks, do a little housework, etc. For many shows, it builds the suspense before the next scenes and provides a small “cliffhanger.” Like the powerful scene in Little House on the Prairie where Mary realizes she can’t see. D.R.A.M.A!

I also wish the Dick Van Dyke Show were on television. I think TV Land could actually have TWO networks – one with the shows we love from the 70s and 80s, and with TV Land’s original new shows (High School Reunion is simply brilliant) and one for shows and movies prior to the 70s. They could show Lucy (!!!), Dick Van Dyke, Dobie Gillis (a new generation could fall head over heals in love with Maynard G. Krebbs, Dobie, and Zelda – the original hipsters), Father Knows Best, The Patty Duke Show, Leave it to Beaver, and so on.

Did I mention they could show Lucy?

The US Postal Service will be releasing an “Early TV Memories” stamp set this year devoted to the golden age of television – you know, the one we totally delight ourselves in. Included in the set will be (of course) our beloved Lucy and Ethel. Their stamp commemorates their stellar job on the chocolate assembly line.

Also featured in the set will be Joe Friday, Groucho Marx, Dinah Shore (hers shows her throwing her audience a kiss), The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Ed Sullivan Show, The George Burns & Gracie Allen Show, The Honeymooners, The Howdy Doody Show, Kukla, Fran and Ollie, Lassie, The Lone Ranger, Perry Mason, The Phil Silvers Show, The Red Skelton Show, Tonight Show and The Twilight Zone.

Sigh. I just wish we had a network that aired these classics. TV Land should launch a sister network called TV Land Classic. There are just too many great shows for them to show at once.

The Early TV Memories stamp set is scheduled for release Aug. 11 in Los Angeles. This is one stamp set I’ll be collecting – to the tune of every single one.

I guess it wasn’t too big of a surprise that Job Switiching won, but I expected Lucy Does a TV Commercial to finish much higher. I wonder if some people didn’t realize the title of the Vitameatavegamin episode.

As I was watching each of the episodes, it struck me again just how brilliantly talented all of the people involved with I Love Lucy were. The entire cast was perfect – all four stars were magical. And the writers? Forget about it! They were waaaay ahead of their time.

Thanks, TV Land for the funnest New Year’s Eve ever! 2008 was a very eventful year (some good, some bad), and bringing Lucy into our living rooms all day was a perfect way to close it out.

Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that TV Land doesn’t have I Love Lucy in their daytime’s lineup anymore.  That’s sad – I’d love for a network to show I Love Lucy and  Dick Van Dyke.  I guess we’d all better buy the dvd sets, eh?  I already have one season of I Love Lucy – I’d better get the rest!

Does the Dick Van Dyke show even have dvds?  I don’t recall ever seeing any.  If anyone ever finds either one of these beloved classics on a tv schedule, please let me know.

When Rick asks Lucy why her bank account is alwyas overdrawn in the episode “Job Switching,” Lucy has the perfect answer. One that, to me, seems perfectly reasonable.

Don’t forget the I Love Lucy Countdown Marathon on TV Land tomorrow (New Year’s Eve). As you can see, I’ve redone the site in Lucy’s honor for January. There are precious things in the world I’d rather do than sit down with an episode of I Love Lucy, so this is the perfect way to start a year off.

See the resolutions on the banner? Yeah, they’d be my top two resolutions. After all, if you’re going to make resolutions, you may as well make ones you’ll keep. Thanks to TV Land, I can watch I Love Lucy in the morning – and thanks to dvds, I can watch her in the evening. Start the day with a smile and finish it out the same way. Sweet.

I haven’t finished my list of resolutions yet, but I know “Eat Chocolate every day” and “Drink Coffee every day” will be right up there.

Something I’m going to do throughout January is have a Daily Lucy Post (in addition to regular posts). Some will be quotes from the series, some will be videos, and others will be trivia.

Have a great New Year’s Eve – make it I Love Lucy front to back!

I was working on a series of posts for everything they’re up to, but I thought (rather than having 5 different posts!) I’d compile the fun stuff all in one place. Cool?

I Love Lucy!

You know me – what am I going to be the most excited about? LUCY! TV Land will be having an I Love Lucy Countdown on New Year’s Eve and as a matter of fact, no, I will not miss a single second. Click HERE to vote for your favorite episode from a list that’s next to impossible to choose from! When you hover over the title, you’ll see a box with a description. This was a great idea on their part because not everyone’s a walking, talking I Love Lucy encyclopedia like your’s truly.

It was SO hard to pick just one!

Be sure to tune in December 31 as the hilarious episodes play out. I imagine that the Lucy Makes a Commercial episode will finish highly. So freaking funny.

High School Reunion Returns in February

The wildly fun and popular High School Reunion was one of the most clever ideas for a reality show ever. It returns in February in an amazing locale.

From TV Land:
High school alumni from Arizona’s Chandler High School’s Class of 1988 reunite for a two-week getaway on the luxurious island of Kauai to rekindle old relationships, reveal long-held secrets and resolve deep-seated issues from 20 years ago with this eight-part reality series. Premiering on Wednesday, February 18 at 10PM ET/PT, the series is executive produced by Mike Fleiss (“The Bachelor”) in association with Warner Horizon Television.

Marcia?! Marcia?! Marcia?! Try Jan! Jan! Jan!

TV Land will air a marathon of the “The Brady Bunch” on New Year’s Day. It’ll feature Jan hot and heavy. All of her teenage dramas will be featured in this showcase. I love Jan Brady, so I’m totally there.

Cougar on the Loose

TV Land will air a new reality show this spring called The Cougar.

From TV Land:
Young men vie for the attention of a sexy and accomplished mature woman through a series of creative and romantic challenges on the premiere of this highly-anticipated elimination dating series. The eight episode series is executive produced by Mike Fleiss (“The Bachelor”) in association with Warner Horizon Television.

Watch for her in Spring of 2009. If it has The Bachelor’s producer, I think the show will be pretty special.

Duh on me. Duh all over me. I’d never even visited the CBS Online Store – because (obviously), with rare exceptions (House, Survivor, Amazing Race, Fringe) I much prefer yesterday’s television shows to todays. As you can imagine, TVLand is on my television more than any other network.

Anyway, I had no idea the CBS Store featured my kind of people: Lucy, Ricky, Andy, Barney, Matt Dillon, Dr. Quinn (I’d love to see TVLand bring this series on board), Laverne, Shirley, Fonzie, Richie, Granny, Jed, Ellie Mae, Jethro, the Brady’s, the Love Boat crew, Spock, Captain Kirk, The Little Rascals, etc!

They also have Beverly Hills 90210, Jericho, Taxi, and countless other shows.

Click the link above to take a look at the different tees and merchandise. There’s a really great tee with Andy, Opie, and Barney that reads, “Nobody Escapes From the Mayberry Jail.” We know better, of course, but shhhhh. No need breaking Barney’s spirit.

Ricky: Hot Jacks?
Lucy: You were closer with tortillas. They are Hot Cakes.
Ricky: Oh!
(takes a bite) Ricky Ricardo: No, these are Cold Cakes.

Ricky:  What have you got? 
Lucy: Where:
Ricky: In back of you there.

Ricky: Something’s wrong with the electricity. My shaver isn’t working.

Ricky: I’m just going to let her stew in her own goose for awhile.

Ricky: How do spell s’perience?
Lucy: E-x-p
Ricky: E-x? You’re kidding.

Desi Arnaz was and is, without a doubt, one of the most underrated comics ever. I watch, on average, two I Love Lucy’s a day (Thank you, TVLand!) and I am floored by his comedic talents each and every episode. We all know Lucille Ball was probably the greatest star to ever live – but Desi was nothing short of remarkable. His timing and the way he delivered his lines was on par with anyone. Ever.

The shadow Lucy cast was just SO powerful. Unfortuantely for Desi, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley, limelight cannot be stolen from Lucille Ball.
