Wow. Talk about making a lasting impression. I never realized it until I loooked into it this morning, but Eartha Kitt was actually in only 3 Batman episodes:

• Catwoman’s Dressed to Kill (1967)
• The Funny Feline Felonies (1967)
• The Joke’s on Catwoman (1968)

It seems like her beautiful face and remarkable voice were around for a lot more. That’s the beauty of syndication.. multiplication.

Sadly, Eartha Kitt passed away yesterday – on Christmas Day.

The 5′ 4″ beauty was born in South Carolina. Her birth was the result of a white plantation owner raping a sharecropper mother of African-American and Cherokee Native American descent. I wasn’t going to include that bit of ugliness in this article, but the fact that Eartha came from such unremarkable beginnings, yet ended her life known the world over strikes me as spectacular!

I also wanted to be clear about why her mother would even think about giving her baby girl away – which she did. By the age of 9, Eartha was living in Harlem. She dropped out of school by the age of 15. Eartha was too busy just trying to survive – school didn’t rank up there with finding a place to sleep and something to eat. During this time, she slept at friends houses and on the subway.

While Eartha Kitt was born with a lot of burdens to bear, she was also born with a lot of talent. She literally sang and danced her way to a better life. Eartha performed with the Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe on a European tour, and she performed as a solist at a Paris night club, where she became a very big deal. Get this, the infamous Orson Welles called her “the most exciting girl in the world.”

Eartha Kitt never shied away from speaking her mind. I guess when you’ve already seen life’s ugliest, you throw caution aside – sort of like, “What do I need with you?!” She was all but booted from the country after making anti-war statements during a White House luncheon with Lady Bird Johnson in 1968. It wasn’t until 1977, under Jimmy Carter’s administration, that she was welcomed back to the White House.

According to one of my favorite websites, Popeater, the following celebrities have the following phobias:

Johnny Depp has Coulophobia: A fear of clowns. Johnny told The Courier Mail, “I guess I am afraid of them because it’s impossible — thanks to their painted-on smiles, to distinguish if they are happy or if they’re about to bite your face off.”

Daniel Radcliffe also has a great fear of clowns.

Carmen Electra has a fear of water. “I get terrified anywhere near it and have a panic attack,” she confessed to Sky One Magazine.

Jennifer Aniston developed a fear of flying after being caught in an electrical storm on a flight from Toronto to New York City.

One of my favorite celeb fears is courtesy of Orlando Bloom. The man’s afraid of pigs!

Matthew McConaughey gets all kinds of stressed out around revolving doors.

Justin Timberlake (something we can all relate to) doesn’t confine his fears to just one thing. He lists sharks, spiders and snakes amongst the things he’d never want to encounter.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is extremely afraid of graveyards. According to people who worked with her on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, fake graveyard sets had to be built because she refused to film in graveyards. (From a standpoint of respect and decency, I’d have to side with her on this one!)

With a fear that makes Orlando’s seem more reasonable, one of the greatest actresses of our time, Nicole Kidman, is terrified of butterflies. “Sometimes when I would come home from school the biggest butterfly or moth you’d ever seen would be just sitting on our front gate. I would climb over the fence or crawl around to the side of the house – anything to avoid having to go through the front gate.”

My greatest fear is snakes – but I’m also frightfully claustrophobic and terrified of high places and deep water. How about it? What are your greatest fears? Do you share any of these celebrities fears?

One of my favorite actresses, Angelina Jolie, is also one of the people I most respect. I love that she gave her own life a make-over of sorts. What’s truly amazing is that, in doing so, she has helped, is helping, and will help countless people along the way.

I have nothing but respect for someone who not only attempts to save the world but fully believes they can do it – and Heaven help the person who tries to stand in their way!

Angelina Jolie travelled to the Middle East last week in her role as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency. She met refugees who have returned home after fleeing the country following the downfall of the Taliban regime in 2001, and also visited projects run by Afghan Hands, an organisation which helps women and children.

The thing Angelina wanted to do most after her trip to Afghanistan was to hug her 6 children. And she did. She was so emotionally drained following her visit to the war torn country that she couldn’t wait to see her family again.

When asked what she did when she returned home, Angelina replied: “Hug the kids.”

Angelina said: “After seeing real suffering, you never complain anymore.”

She recently revealed she thinks people take her politics “less seriously” because she is an actress: “I don’t necessarily think that’s a natural role for an actor. Sometimes acting and politics make a very bad combination. I think that sometimes people take me less seriously in my work for the UN because I appear in movies.”

Okay, I admit it, I was getting a little peeved that the newest James Bond movie wasn’t including the “Bond. James Bond” line or the “Shaken, not stirred” martini. I mean, I’m nothing if not a traditionalist and I HATE to have my traditions messed with.

It was honestly even getting in the way of my excitement for the movie.

Fortunately, USA Today ran an interview with Daniel Craig (this will be his second movie as James Bond) and he addressed these very things. I feel 100 percent better have resumed a fever anticipation for what looks to be an amazing movie.

Have I told you yet that during an early screening of Quantum Solace, the audience actually broke out in applause during a chase scene, and then again at the end of the film as the credits rolled? You don’t hear about that happening too often.

Below are the quotes by Daniel Craig taken from the USA Today article that ran last Monday:

“Everybody says to me, ‘Is Bond going to be Bond now?’ And I’ve been like, ‘Yeah, well, kind of.’ But he’s got a way to go yet.”

“He’s supposed to be this superspy, suave and sophisticated. But I didn’t want to start by copying what came before, but to get to that point by making it a real journey.”

Daniel Craig has signed to do at least two more James Bond films and says that eventually all of the familiar characteristics (my beloved traditions) will reveal themselves. He told USA Today that he hopes they will be more satisfying since they aren’t being delivered just because they have to be.

“I’m as big a fan as anybody of all his catchphrases and the martini,” he says, “But I want to find a new way of doing them.”

Fair enough.

Quantum Solace opens in theaters November 14.

We might as well admit it – even raise a mug of coffee and toast to it – 40 IS the new 30. Recently, Johnny Depp (and other 40ish actors) dominated a “Sexiest man alive” poll in Cosmo magazine. Now, gorgeous Halle Berry has added another accomplishment for the fab 40’s.

Halle Berry was named “Sexiest Woman Alive” by Esquire magazine – a choice that’s completely impossible to find fault with. So, in her honor, today is Halle Berry Day on Hollywood Yesterday. You can’t be that fine and talented and not get recognized for it.

Did You Know?
Halle Berry was born on August 14 (my birthday as well!) in 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Halle has an older sister named Heidi but, unfortunately, the sisters are estranged.

Representing her home state of Ohio, Halle Berry won the Miss Teen All-American Pageant in 1985.

In 1986, she was the runner-up in the Miss USA Pageant.

Her first TV series was Living Dolls. On set, she earned a reputation for her tireless commitment to her craft. She became known as an actress who didn’t just “play” a role, she became the role – even after the cameras stopped rolling.

Halle Berry is a type 1 diabetic.

One of my husband’s favorite actors is Vin Diesel. You put in a Vin Diesel movie and he’s transfixed until the credits roll. Below are some facts about the actor that I’ve rounded up, as well as a few of his quotes.

At the screening of City Of Ember at Fantastic Fest, Bill Murray, who was a surprise guest, answered questions from the audience. The subject of the recently announced Ghostbusters 3 came up and here’s what Bill had to say:

“Well, I think the wounds from Ghostbusters 2 have healed. And supposedly they’ve got 2 guys from The Office to write a script? That could work, I think that’s a good idea to get a fresh look at it. I’ve always liked the characters, the characters were fun. And we did have a lot of fun making the movie, the first one was really a lot of fun to make. I think the first 45 minutes of Ghostbusters is about as funny as a movie gets. We didn’t have a lot of special effect in it, it was just a couple. It was just the funny characters in that world, and I liked that movie because of it. I think the first movie had something like 60 plate shots or something like that? The second one had hundreds. The special (FX) guys got their hands on the script early (for GHOSTBUSTERS 2) and it was just gone. It went away. The script went away. It was hard to wrangle because it was tied all around the FX without story coming first or the characters moving through it, so – they’re hard movies to write. And Dan really caught it with that first one. He really caught it. And it’s fun. Characters are fun to do. We did the video game this summer and it was fun to do it again. I found myself walking down 5th Avenue singing the song! People (walking by) were like ‘God, that guy’s really full of himself’”

Ghostbusters 3? Is it a little early to start getting excited?

Paul Newman died in his home in Westport, Connecticut yesterday (Friday, September 27) from cancer. Paul Newman was one of the few people in this world who’s class and personal character defined him. Who he was was larger than what he did for a living. Whenever I think of the word Paul Newman, I think of an individual who devoted the majority of their life to helping children who needed, desperately, for someone to care.

I also think of a devoted and loving husband. He was married to Joanne Woodward in 1958 and neither ever saw fit to untie the union. When asked about his faithfulness to his wife, Paul Newman once said, “Why would I go out for a hamburger when (I) have steak at home?”

Paul Newman, one of the greatest “method actors” ever, starred in classics such as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “Exodus,” “The Hustler,” “Cool Hand Luke,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Sting” and “The Verdict.” In 1986, on his eighth try, he won an oscar for “The Color of Money.”

Paul Newman always did the unexpected. Playing a race car driver in the 1969 movie “Winning” led to him actually competing in races. In fact, he loved it! When he was 70 years young, he participated in the 24 Hours of Daytona and he was still racing at age 80.

Paul Newman was known for his liberal political views and was even on Richard Nixon’s enemies list – a distinction he called “..the highest single honor I’ve ever received.”

In 1982, Paul Newman and a friend (A.E. Hotchner) founded the now infamous Newman’s Own, which produces foods such as pasta sauces, salad dressings, chocolate chip cookies, etc. Remarkably and beautifully, this company donates all profits to charities. Newman once said, “The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is outgrossing my films.” So much so, that last checked – Newman’s Own has given away more than $200 million.

One of the charities aided by this money is one Newman, himself, founded: Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang. This camp was founded to help gravely ill children.

On a totally shallow note, I personally think Mr. Newman was one of the 3 most handsome actors ever (as a matter of fact, I’m having trouble at the moment thinking of who the other 2 would be). He was a looker! Before and after his hair went gray.  Actually, when it turned white, it brought even more attention to his beautiful eyes!

A few Did You Know’s about this remarkable man:

• Paul Newman was born in 1925 in Shaker Heights, Ohio (near Cleveland).
• He served three years in the Navy during WW II.
• He studied acting at Yale and at New York’s Actors’ Studio.
• Paul Newman’s first Hollywood film, “The Silver Chalice,”  bombed royally.  He would make jokes about this movie for rest of his life.  He actually even took out a newspaper ad to apologize for his performance.  Again, pretty unexpected.
• His performance as boxer Rocky Graziano in “Somebody Up There Likes Me” in 1956 ended his newspaper apologies.  This is probably the movie that made him a star.
• The movie “The Long, Hot Summer” (1958) would be even more important to him, however, since it’s when he met his soon-to-be beloved wife of a lifetime, Joanne Woodward.
• Paul Newman’s loss of son Scott to a drug overdose in 1978, understandably, hit him incredibly hard.

Paul Newman is survived by his wife, Joanne Woodward, and five children.  And his millions of fans - and children he has touched.

And the other 2 are…. Um… Nothing. Crickets in the silence.
