One of my husband’s favorite actors is Vin Diesel. You put in a Vin Diesel movie and he’s transfixed until the credits roll. Below are some facts about the actor that I’ve rounded up, as well as a few of his quotes.

Vin Diesel’s mother was an astrologist AND a psychologist. His adoptive dad taught theater. I’m betting they had some pretty cool dinner table conversations.

Vin Diesel was enrolled as an English major at Hunter College, but he left for Hollywood before graduating.

He once worked as a bouncer in New York City.

Vin Diesel’s birth name is Mark Sinclair Vincent.

He’s 6 ft tall.
Has an Italian Mastiff named “Roman”.

Vin has a fraternal twin brother.

On “Late Night with Conan O’Brian” (1993), he admitted that he’s a fan of Dungeons and Dragons and played for 24 years.

He is bi-racial, being half African-American and half Italian American

Vin Diesel was actually cast in Reindeer Games (2000) with Ben Affleck. However, he left shortly after filming began because of concerns with the quality of the screenplay and “creative differences” with director John Frankenheimer.

Revolution Studios wanted him for the title role in Hellboy, but director Guillermo del Toro wanted Ron Perlman, and wouldn’t direct the movie if he wasn’t cast.

Once worked as a telemarketer, selling light bulbs.

He and his girlfriend, Paloma Jimenez, welcomed their first child, a girl, on Apirl 2nd, 2008. Her beautiful name is Hania Riley.

Vin Diesel Quotes:
“Well, I’ve worked out for years. For a long time it was my only sense of gratification.”

“I was being offered three franchises at the same time – Pitch Black, XXX, and The Fast and the Furious – and I had to choose. I couldn’t do all three.” (When asked why he didn’t do the Fast and the Furious sequel.)

“This isn’t a poster. This is a declaration of war!” (about the XXX poster and what it means for his career.)

On the planned Chronicles of Riddick trilogy: “We gave the script to the studio, I bought three leather binders. One said C1, one said C2 and one said C3. They all had locks on them and we only gave the key to C1 to the studio”.

“In the next film, Riddick is going to go to the underverse. Riddick will act with new elementals. Not air elementals [as Judi Dench's character is] but fire and water. It’ll come full circle in C3 when he must return to Furia”.

“The concept behind switching genres was to create a film that you could continue exploring. In the ending of this movie, it’s not just something that says we’re opening it up so we can tell another story, it’s very specific. A very daring ending because it’s left open-ended.” (About The Chronicles of Riddick)

“From the very very beginning, when everyone thought it was crazy, I was thinking of The Chronicles of Riddick as a trilogy. That would start with the movie you saw, and Pitch Black would act as a prequel that introduced you to the character. So in simple terms, in Chronicles 2 we venture to the Underverse. We knew we could get away with a PG-13 on the first one, but once you go to the Underverse it’s rated R, because it’s a place where war is the norm and there is constant, constant battling. Then on Chronicles 3 we will see Riddick return to Furia, to deal with the homeland.”

“If you had asked me back in grade school what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would have said my first choice was an actor, but if I couldn’t be that, I’d want to be a superhero.”

“I was a bouncer for nine years – it was all I knew how to do – and my training was not to talk loosely…That’s still my thought process: Shut your mouth, watch your back and keep working till your ass falls off.

At the screening of City Of Ember at Fantastic Fest, Bill Murray, who was a surprise guest, answered questions from the audience. The subject of the recently announced Ghostbusters 3 came up and here’s what Bill had to say:

“Well, I think the wounds from Ghostbusters 2 have healed. And supposedly they’ve got 2 guys from The Office to write a script? That could work, I think that’s a good idea to get a fresh look at it. I’ve always liked the characters, the characters were fun. And we did have a lot of fun making the movie, the first one was really a lot of fun to make. I think the first 45 minutes of Ghostbusters is about as funny as a movie gets. We didn’t have a lot of special effect in it, it was just a couple. It was just the funny characters in that world, and I liked that movie because of it. I think the first movie had something like 60 plate shots or something like that? The second one had hundreds. The special (FX) guys got their hands on the script early (for GHOSTBUSTERS 2) and it was just gone. It went away. The script went away. It was hard to wrangle because it was tied all around the FX without story coming first or the characters moving through it, so – they’re hard movies to write. And Dan really caught it with that first one. He really caught it. And it’s fun. Characters are fun to do. We did the video game this summer and it was fun to do it again. I found myself walking down 5th Avenue singing the song! People (walking by) were like ‘God, that guy’s really full of himself’”

Ghostbusters 3? Is it a little early to start getting excited?

Maybe it’s because Friends is one of my all-time favorite shows or maybe it’s because I think few things are as artistic and sexy as Rolling Stones covers, but this poster sends me AND brings me back.

What I wouldn’t give for a reunion movie!

We saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull a few nights ago and I loved it. It was one of those completely enjoyable, over the top movies that just make you feel good all over. The movie was a fun ride front to back. Harrison Ford is, and always will be, one of the most talented actors to ever put on a role.

Shia LeBouf showed off his acting skills as well – and they’re quite impressive, thank you very much. I think this young man’s one to watch. If he keeps his head straight, he’ll have a remarkable career. If he’s lucky, he’ll have one like Harrison Ford has enjoyed.

Did you know that The Magnificent Seven was inspired by Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai (1954)? Is that fascinating or what? The Magnificent Seven were, of course: Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, and Brad Dexter. What a line-up. The amazing thing is, the film was cast very quickly to beat an actor’s strike.

Did You Know? (Courtesy of IMDB)

Mexican censors required the peasants to wear clean clothes.

Yul Brynner was married on the set. The celebration used many set props.

James Coburn (Britt) and Robert Vaughn (Lee) were close friends for almost 50 years but this is their only film together.

Yul Brynner made sure he always appeared taller than Steve McQueen in the film. He even made a little mound of dirt and stood on it for their shots together! McQueen casually kicked at the mound every time he passed by it.

According to Eli Wallach’s autobiography, Yul Brynner had a major problem with what he considered to be Steve McQueen trying to upstage him. According to Wallach, McQueen would do things when on screen with Brynner to draw attention to his character. Examples: Shaking the shotgun shells, taking off his hat to check the sun during the hearse scene, and leaning off his horse to dip his hat in the river when the Seven cross into Mexico.

Brynner was supposedly so worried about McQueen stealing his thunder that he hired an assistant to count the number of times McQueen touched his own hat when he (Brynner) was speaking!

Priceless. I’m going to watch for that next time I watch the movie.

By the way, AMC’s website has a completely cool tool. You can search through the guide of movies and shows for the month, find the ones you want to watch, and sign up for e-mail reminders. They, then, will let you know when the show you want to see is coming up. If you’re like me, you’re tired of great movies passing by – this way, they’ll never get past us again!

Clint Eastwood and Charlton Heston

Sadly, one of my all-time favorite actors recently died. He did, however, get to live a long, rewarding life and make a huge impact on the entertainment world – whether he was battling apes or delivering the 10 Commandments. Of course I’m referring to the one and only, larger than life Charlton Heston. When I was really, really young….and my interest was beginning to be held by the male population, Charlton Heston (along with Clint Eastwood) were early crushes. While most girls my age were enthralled by celebrities of our own generation (Shaun Cassidy, Parker Stevenson, Mark Hamil…) – I was much more attracted to the tough guys from the past. Besides, around my house, that’s the sort of thing my dad always had on. Old movies and the Rockford Files. (I liked him, too!)

I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve seen the Planet of the Apes movies – each and every one of them. I love this series! Campy? Sure. But I can’t get enough of the whole experience – from the UNBELIEVABLE music to the first sign of an ape… I’m glued to the screen right till the end. Each and every time.

We’ve lost a great, great actor and person. Damn dirty death!

I would like to say this (although I try to keep political and social opinions off of most of my blogs…especially my entertainment ones) – I wish people would quit harping on Charlton Heston’s views on guns/gun control. This is America, and everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. They’re free to express themselves as well as their opinions. If someone, today (with the world as it is now) doesn’t agree with Mr. Heston’s views on guns – they have to remember that he came from a different generation than the rest of us. The world when Charlton Heston was growing up – and even the one he lived in as an adult in his 30s and 40s – was vastly different from the one we face today! We have no way of knowing what his opinions would be if he were a 35 year old man in the 2008. He might have had the same opinions (which would have been his right) or he might have had complete opposite opinions (also his right).

I’d just rather concentrate on his entire life – not a tiny portion of it.

Shop MTV is coming out with an AMAZING-sounding collection for Charlton Heston fans: The Hollywood Collection: Charlton Heston – For All Seasons.

From the website:
Expected Release Date: May 6, 2008
Order this item now and we will ship it to you as soon as it is available.

This documentary video, part of The Hollywood Collection, features the life and work of actor and political conservative Charlton Heston.

After growing up in a rural part of Michigan, Heston migrated to the urban landscape of Chicago to attend a high school for the dramatic arts. He attended Northwestern University, where his talent and passion for acting increased with his participation in school theater productions. Then he moved onto the Broadway stage and eventually to the movie soundstages in Hollywood.

Heston, known best for his epic film roles as such biblical characters as Moses in Cecil B. De Mille’s The Ten Commandments and as the title character in William Wyler’s Oscar-winning production of Ben-Hur, speaks openly in this video about his career, family, and his politics. This video also shows movie footage, including a rare 1942 student film of a young Heston. There are also interviews with family, co-workers, and friends, including Gregory Peck.
