My husband and I watched a couple of Abbott and Costello movies last night. There are few things any better than kicking back with Bud and Lou!  One of the movies was Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (click the link to order the dvd).

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is one of my favorite Abbott and Costello movies – it always has been. However, I must say, is this one of the most inappropriately named movies of all time or what?  Of all the “monsters,” Frankenstein is onscreen the least. And he certainly doesn’t have much to say when he is.  I can only assume that Frankie was big at the time, so they went with Frankenstein over Dracula or the Wolf Man, both of whom are onscreen a lot more.

Title aside, I love everything about this movie.  When you sit down to watch an Abbott and Costello movie, you do so with the intentions of leaving everything behind – work, chores, headaches, news, politics, crazy drivers, and so on. You have to just let yourself have fun and enjoy the laughs – you also have to remember that this particular movie was made in 1948, so the effects are going to be…. well, there’ve been more realistic effects on Scooby Doo.

But, I’ll be honest with you, they’re part of what makes this movie (and all classic movies, as far as I’m concerned) so special. I wouldn’t change a thing about this movie – not even the title, because in its own way it’s part of what makes Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein stand out.

Monster movies were HUGE for Universal Pictures in the 1930s.  Then the ’40s rolled in with one of the greatest duos of all time,  Bud Abbott and Lou Costello.  Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein was the first of several movies that combined the “monster hits” (literally) and the much loved Abbott and Costello films. The success of this particular movie led to Abbott and Costello teaming up with the Invisible Man, Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Mummy.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein features a wonderful cast. Count Dracula is deliciously played by Béla Lugosi.  The Wolfman is brought to furry life by Lon Chaney Jr., and Frankenstein is played by veteran monster Glenn Strange.

At the end of the movie, watch (and listen) for an appearance by the Invisible Man. You’ll recognize the voice as that of Vincent Price.  This was actually before he went on to superstardom.

Plot:

Count Dracula’s beloved monster, Frankenstein, needs a new brain.  The Count is adamant that the new brain has to belong to a simpleton – someone without a drop of malice.  Guess what simpleton is hand-picked for the job: Lou Costello’s Wilbur, of course!  Bud Abbot’s Chick, along with the Wolfman, have to save Wilbur and keep his brain where it belongs – in his own head.

Lou Costello is at his best in this movie. He’s absolutely hilarious and offers countless laugh out loud moments.

 Trivia:

  • The movie was originally titled, “The Brain of Frankenstein” (apparently they were adamant that Frankenstein appear in the title somewhere!)
  • The director was Charles Barton, a close friend of both Abbott and Costello’s. Most people consider him to the the duo’s best director.
  • One of the funniest scenes in the movie involves Wilbur (Costello)  unknowingly sitting on Frankenstein’s lap. The scene required multiple shots because Costello was allowed to  improvise, which caused Glen Strange (Frankenstein) to constantly break out laughing!
  • Charles Barton also directed 1959′s classic The Shaggy Dog .
  • Lenore Aubert (Sandra) was born in present-day Slovenia. She teamed up with the duo again 1949′s Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff.

Quotes:

Chick: I don’t get it. Out of all the guys around here that classy dish has to pick out a guy like you.
Wilbur: What’s wrong with that?
Chick: Go look at yourself in the mirror sometime.
Wilbur: Why should I hurt my own feelings?

Larry Talbot (Wolfman): You don’t understand. Every night when the moon is full, I turn into a wolf.
Wilbur: You and twenty million other guys.

Chick Young: You’re making enough noise to wake up the dead!
Wilbur Grey: I don’t have to wake him up. He’s up.

Cleopatra DVD with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

With an upcoming movie and several new books hitting the market, Cleopatra is all the rage. I’ve noticed that Cleopatra costumes are pretty hot this Halloween as well, always a great indicator of popularity.

Those of us with an “old school” Hollywood mindset know there’s only one name that should come to mind when you hear Cleopatra and that’s Elizabeth Taylor. Fans of the golden age of Hollywood and of Elizabeth Taylor, herself, will want to add the Cleopatra to their collection.

Product Description

Richard Burton, Rex Harrison and Elizabeth Taylor star in one of the greatest screen spectacles ever made – the story of the Queen of the Nile and her love affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. The film is distinguished by superb performances from Burton and Harrison (nominated for an Oscar), but at its center is Elizabeth Taylor in one of the most glamorous roles of her career. Astounding in scope and grandeur, the picture won Oscars for cinematography, sets and special effects. It’s famous moments include moviedom’s most flamboyant entrance – Cleopatra’s dazzling arrival in Rome. Bolstered by a talented supporting cast and utterly stunning backdrops, here is a truly epic portrayal of the woman who conquered two of Rome’s greatest soldiers, affected the course of history, and became synonymous with beguiling beauty – Cleopatra.

Order your own Cleopatra today or buy it as a gift for a lucky Elizabeth Taylor fan.

James Bond 007

Sponsored Post

If you dig a little into the future of the James Bond film series, you will find many references to the mysterious Bond 23… OK, well, maybe not so mysterious. Bond 23, although it sounds a little like a secret code one may find in the films themselves, simply refers to the 23rd installment in the Bond film franchise, which is, as yet unnamed, unfilmed and until recently, unconfirmed. It has, however, been cast – Daniel Craig will return as agent 007 after his successful performances in 2006’s Casino Royale and 2008’s Quantum of Solace.

Bond 23 looked like a dead cert after the success of the last two installments, but the production was suspended indefinitely after MGM suffered major financial difficulty. Supposedly, the film is once more underway with Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) pulling out of other projects in order to take the helm as director. Hopefully shooting will begin mid to late 2011 for a 2012 release, a year later than originally anticipated. There is no word as yet as to which actress or actresses will take to the screen as the next Bond girl(s).

So the future of Bond as a film franchise currently looks uncertain at the hands of MGM, but the back catalogue of Bond is definitely something not to be overlooked. From Connery to Craig, 1962 to 2008, there are 22 Bond films to get under your belt if you haven’t already. Every Bond film is available on DVD, including some shiny enhanced versions of the very early entries. Most importantly, be sure to watch or re-watch Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace – what’s your take on Daniel Craig in the role? Will he make it past Bond 23? Will he even make it there, with the film in such financial turmoil at the time of writing? We’ll just have to wait and see. If you can’t wait for the new bond film head over to LOVEFiLM where you can rent out all the classic bond movies including live and let die and Goldeneye.

Wizard of Oz

Wizard of Oz
Buy This Allposters.com

I recently read the exceptional book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Wicked Years) and have had The Wizard of Oz on my mind since. Like a lot of movies (Gone With the Wind, Casablanca, It’s a Wonderful Life…) and a lot of stars (Elvis, Lucille Ball, Rita Hayworth), sometimes we take The Wizard of Oz for granted. It has become such a permanent fixture of our lives and our memories that we sometimes fail to realize what a magical, larger than life movie it truly was.

That’s why I wanted to put this post together to sort of keep the magic alive. When we’re fans of movies and/or stars, we should do everything in our power to keep the imagery and the memory as alive today as it was when we first saw it.

The Wizard of Oz DVDs

First up, the The Wizard of Oz (Two-Disc 70th Anniversary Edition) (shown above).   This two disc set is currently less than $12 on Amazon.  It’s normally over $20, which, if you ask me would still be a heck of a great deal.

From Amazon.com

When it was released during Hollywood’s golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn’t start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn’t until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz‘s TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz–the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)–have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy’s enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film’s still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it’s loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it’s required viewing for kids of all ages. –Jeff Shannon

Inside Man with Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, and Jodie Foster is probably one of my favorite Denzel Washington movies.  It’s definitely my favorite Clive Owen movie – I think this is his best role ever.  He seemed to have a lot of fun with the character (Dalton Russell).  In fact, I’d love to see the actor play more villains. It seems to be something he relishes.

I also loved Jodie Foster in this movie. As Madeleine White, she oozed sex appeal and her performance and presence can only be called mesmerizing. Personally, I think she all but stole the movie.  Fellow Jodie Foster fans will rank this as one of their favorite movies on Foster’s performance alone.  She proved, even with a role that didn’t take up a lot of screen time (not nearly as much as you’d like for it to) that she is one of the most powerful actresses ever.  When she’s onscreen, she doesn’t just command attention, she demands it – subtly but oh so powerfully!

The star of course, however, is Mr. Denzel Washington.  He was flawless (as always) in the lead role as NYPD Detective Keith Frazier.  The viewer has no problem at all believing that he is a New York detective.  Whatever character this actor takes on is 100 percent believable – he becomes the character through and through.  The A list celebrity and award-winning actor loses himself entirely in the role.  All that is left is the character and his story, without a trace of Denzel Washington to be found.  It’s one of the reasons he’s a favorite actor of mine – as well as the rest of the world’s!

Another star of the movie was William Dafoe as Captain John Darius.  He played a gritty, hardened captain of police and, like Denzel Washington, he was 100 percent believable.

Lost fans will also recognize Ken Leung (Miles on Lost) in a small role.  As someone who is missing Lost like mad, it was GREAT to see a familiar face!

Spike Lee directed Inside Man and did an exceptional job.  He also directed the masterpiece that was Malcolm X – also starring Denzel Washington.  Often Spike Lee comes across as angry, controversial, and extremely outspoken.  Personally, I think most pioneers in their chosen fields come across this way.  I believe the ones that go on to greatness take these emotions and use them as the vehicle that drives them to success.  Two of the best-directed movies I can think of (Malcolm X and Inside Man) were directed by Spike Lee, so there you go.  Love him or hate him (or somewhere in between), the man’s darn good at what he does.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Spike Lee scored his biggest hit to date with Inside Man, an unconventional thriller with fascinating details in the margins of its convoluted plot. The screenplay (by first-timer Russell Gerwitz) could’ve used a few more rewrites; it moves at a brisk pace but in hindsight a lot of it doesn’t make sense. That makes Inside Man more fun to watch than to think about afterwards (when you discover plot holes big enough to drive a truck through), but it’s curiously involving, especially as NYPD Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) struggles to outsmart a high-stakes bank robber (Clive Owen) who, along with a well-trained crew of accomplices, has seized control of a Wall Street bank, turning what initially looks like a hostage crisis into a personal crusade to expose some mysterious evil secrets. As you might expect from the director of Do the Right Thing, Lee seizes several satisfying opportunities to examine post-9/11 issues of racial prejudice and domestic terrorism, and the mysterious “problem solver” Madeline White (Jodie Foster), as eerily sinister as she is vaguely defined, is worthy of her own movie. With the benefit of his most stellar cast to date (including Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe and Chiwetel Ejiofor), Lee seems more interested in character details than well-crafted suspense, but that doesn’t stop Inside Man from being engrossing, subtly amusing, and quirky enough to qualify as a welcomed break from the formulaic thrillers that are Hollywood’s bread and butter.–Jeff Shannon

Product Description

Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, Academy Award nominee Clive Owen and Academy Award winner Jodie Foster star in this intense and explosive crime thriller. The perfect bank robbery quickly spirals into an unstable and deadly game of cat-and-mouse between a criminal mastermind (Owen), a determined detective (Washington), and a power broker with a hidden agenda (Foster). As the minutes tick by and the situation becomes increasingly tense, one wrong move could mean disaster for any one of them. From acclaimed director Spike Lee comes the edge-of-your-seat, action-packed thriller that The Wall Street Journal calls “a heist film that’s right on the money.”
