My husband and I went to see Sandra Bullock’s new movie, The Blind Side, last night.  She’s one of my favorite actresses – so if she’s in it, I’m there.  This was probably her best performance ever and was one of my favorite Sandra Bullock movies… heck, it was one of my favorite  movies, period.

I love for a movie to have a great time – and this one most certainly did.  I also love for a movie to touch my emotions and move them.  The Blind Side moved me the way Michael Oher moves members of the opposing team!

Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw are flawless as Leigh Ann and Sean Tuohy.   Sandra Bullock is better than ever, in a role that could easily have been overplayed, overdone, and overcooked.  She delivers a perfectly understated, dead on, wonderful performance.   I didn’t know what to expect from Country superstar Tim McGraw, but he isn’t Country superstar Tim McGraw in this movie… he’s actor Tim McGraw, who also happens to sing.  The casting department took a big chance in casting him in this role and he didn’t let them down one bit.  He nailed it.  As a fan, I was thrilled.

Young Jae Head (Hancock) is a scene stealer in every sense of the word as the Tuohy’s youngest child.  He is absolutely adorable and provides many of the film’s laughs.  Quinton Aaron (Michael Oher) is also outstanding in a role that he brought so much heart and soul to.  I can’t wait to see what’s next for this young man.

A lovely new face, British actress Lily Collins, plays the Touy’s daughter (Collins) in the film.   There’s something about this young lady that reminds me of another one of my favorite acttesses, Keira Knightley.  That – needless to say – could serve her very well!

You really have to see this wonderful movie – you’ll be so glad you did.

If, like me, you’re a huge fan of Ina Garten (aka the Barefoot Contessa), it may surprise you to know that Barefoot Contessa was actually a movie before it was a lovely chef extraordinaire!

Barefoot Contessa was a highly entertaining movie starring Humphrey Bogart and one of my personal favorites, the insanely beautiful Ava Gardner.

In one of the last films before his death in 1957, Humphrey Bogart plays washed-up film director Harry Dawes, who sees another chance at success when he meets Spanish dancer Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner) and recognizes her star potential. Harry’s willingness to let Maria keep her independence, and his steadfast character, wins him her undying friendship; the two weather the Hollywood seas, made stormy by Maria’s own tempestuous spirit and the greedy nature of the film business. Maria’s final break from Hollywood throws her into the arms of a Prince Charming whose secrets lead her down a destructive path. Impatience with Hollywood is evident in every line of director-writer Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s dialogue (as in the unforgettable ALL ABOUT EVE), but he carefully plants the seeds of Maria’s decline in her character rather than simplistically painting her fate as a reaction to fame. Bogart, in an role atypical for him of platonic friend to his female costar, is the touchstone of the movie and its most sympathetic character, while Gardner’s eyes snap with passion as she searches for her fairy-tale ending.

Film director Harry Dawes (Humphrey Bogart) contemplates, in a series of flashbacks, the life of beautiful Hollywood star Maria Vargas (Ava Gardner). A flamenco dancer at a second-rate club when a trio of film business bigwigs discover her, soon Vargas has acquired fame, riches, and love. On the surface, it seems as if she has it all; but a dark secret in her marriage and Maria’s fiery spirit lead to tragedy. Spicy dialogue from director-writer Joseph L. Mankiewicz and the complex but platonic friendship between Harry and Maria make this film memorable.

When Ina Garten first launched into the food industry, she did so by buying and running a shop named after the movie, The Barefoot Contessa. The name stands for “elegance and earthiness,” which definitely describe the popular Food Network chef and cookbook author – so the name stuck.

Here’s a little trivia I found fascinating. Ray Park plays “Snake Eyes” in GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. He played “Toad” in X-Men (2000) and was Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999).

Ray Park has won numerous championships and medals after falling in love with martial arts at the age of 7.

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra was one of those movies that my husband was more interested in than I was. In the same way he came with me to see The Proposal, I went with him to see GI Joe. Funny thing happened though – I absolutely LOVED this movie. It is hilarious and fiercely entertaining.

GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra is one of those rare films where you don’t look away from the screen from opening credits to closing credits. There was killer action in every scene.

Afterward I thought, “Finally, another movie that was as entertaining as Star Trek.” I thought Transformers 2 was going to be but.. well, not quite.

Sienna Miller does a sensational job in GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra as bad girl/good girl Ana. I’ve seen her in a few other movies, and I just can’t get over how much she has grown as an actress. At this rate, I can’t wait to see her next movie – and I hope it’s a starring role.

She blew me away.

I was impressed with the rest of the cast as well. There were several fairly newcomers that I’d love to see more of: Rachel Nichols (Scarlett), Channing Tatum (Duke), Byung-hun Lee (Storm Shadow), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Heavy Duty), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Rex), Marlon Wayans (Ripcord), Jonathan Pryce (US President – best known for his Pirates of the Caribbean role.).

Marlon Wayans is beyond hilarious and puts the steal in scene stealer.

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, put your shoes on and head off for the theater. It’s a must see.

Best. Movie. Ever.
Everything I hoped it’d be.
Actually, MORE than I hoped it’d be.
Why in the name of all that’s right didn’t JJ Abrams do the Planet of the Apes movie?

That’s an inventory of the first thoughts I had as the credits rolled after Star Trek. If you read this blog regularly (or any of my sites), you know that I see a LOT of movies – new and old. I see so many that I always hold back on the three worded phrase of praise (Best movie ever.)

In fact, there have been movies that I loved to absolute distraction (Grand Torino, Wanted, X Men Origins, Pride and Prejudice, all of the POTC movies, Secret Window, the Bourne movies, Kung Fu Panda, the Ocean movies, Sweeney Todd, Fracture, State of Play, 3:10 to Yuma…) – but when I left the theater, I was simply thinking, “That was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen..” or even, “That was the best movie this year…” But Star Trek broke out the big one.

Best. Movie. Ever.

This movie has everything it needs and nothing it doesn’t. Now, I loved the series – I’ve seen them all a gazillion times and can practically tell you what Spock and Kirk will say at any given time. I’ll also be quick to point out that William Shatner, along with Charlton Heston, doesn’t get nearly enough attention for being the man beast that he was. Go back and watch Star Trek episodes sometimes and tell me Kirk wasn’t simply beautiful!

My husband, our youngest daughter, and her boyfriend, saw the movie together. We represented 4 completely different audience members:

1. I loved the series.
2. My husband hated the series.
3. My daughter never saw a single episode.
4. Her boyfriend has seen some episodes.

I couldn’t have been more thrilled with the way JJ Abrams treated the franchise. He was completely true to the show’s history as well as its characters.   He did a flawless, even breathtaking, job.  I was worried about my daughter – I didn’t know if the show would make enough sense to her, since she’d never seen as much as a scene from the original series, but following the movie, we said the SAME thing at the SAME time:  “Best movie ever.”

She got it.

So did the guys, they absolutely loved it, too.  I can’t imagine anyone NOT loving this movie.  There’s lots of humor, an insane amount of action, drama, suspense, and special effects that’ll make you nearly choke on your over-priced popcorn.

The leads – Chris Pine (James Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) – are headed for HUGE success and, hopefully, a sequel.  Then another, then another, then another…. all crafted by the brilliant JJ Abrams. Chris Pine made the perfect Kirk and they couldn’t have created a better Spock if they built him.  Each actor gave depth and believability to their roles and never (not even for a moment) tried to one up the story or character by over acting or resorting to cheese.  Their performances are hugely responsible for this movie’s success.  Even JJ Abrams and his ridiculously talented crew couldn’t have compensated for weak casting.  Fortunately, this is one of the strongest casts you could hope for.

The rest of the stellar cast includes:

Bruce Greenwood as one of the most likable characters in the movie, Capt. Christopher Pike.  You may remember him as the President in National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007). He was also in I, Robot, Double Jeopardy, Deja Vu among many other movies and television appearances.

Karl Urban gave new meaning to the word scenstealer as Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy. Brilliant casting! I would have never thought of Karl Urban as Bones – but now I can’t imagine anyone else being the great doctor. He brought so much life to the screen and a great deal of humor. I can’t imagine the movie without him, and that’s the mark of a truly great actor. Karl Urban is probably best known for his role in The Lord of the Rings movies (Eomer). He was also excellent in The Bourne Supremacy (Kirill – he was evil), Pathfinder, The Chronicles of Riddick (Vaako), and Doom (with The Rock).

Gorgeous Zoe Saldana plays Nyota Uhura. She’s relatively new to me, but she has been in Blackout, Six Degrees, and Vantage Point. She makes a perfect leading lady – she’s as talented as she is beautiful – and the movie wouldn’t have been the same without her.

In another great casting move, Eric Bana was cast as the villain, Nero. He was brilliant. Like Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, he could have gone too far with the role – but, also like them – he helped make the movie extra special by allowing the action, the story, and the dialogue to be the star.

I don’t want to give away anything else, because the characters and story are best when they’re allowed to unfold before your very eyes. Suffice to say, the cast is as flawless as the movie, itself.

I seldom see a movie more than once in a theater (Iron Man and Wanted are two rare exceptions), but I can’t wait to see Star Trek again. And again. And again. I’ve got it planned out, I’ll just keep watching it over and over (in the theater, then on dvd) until they come out with the sequel. A gal has to have a plan in place, right?

I just can’t say enough good things about this movie, about JJ Abrams (Seriously, can you imagine how amazing Planet of the Apes would be if he did it?!), or this incredible cast. All I can say is….

Best movie ever.

Edward: And so the lion fell in love with the lamb.
Bella: What a stupid lamb.
Edward: What a sick, masochistic lion.

Before we went to see Twilight Friday night, I was a little nervous. Honestly, I read (just for the heck of it) about 9 reviews that day and they weren’t just all bad – they were hideously bad.

Critics didn’t like the directing, they didn’t like the stars, they didn’t like the dialogue, they didn’t like the action, they didn’t like the close ups (are you even kidding me?).

Bella: Are you going to tell me how you stopped the van?
Edward: Yeah. Um… I had an adrenaline rush. It’s very common. You can Google it.

I was blown away by every single aspect of the movie. I love the fact that there was so much energy and excitement in the lobby. We all had to stand in line for over an hour waiting to go back – even after we had our tickets. It reminded me of the frenzy that surrounded The Dark Knight, the Pirates movies, and I Am Legend.

Some people wore Team Edward tops while a few had on Team Jacob ones. A lot of the girls had their hair fixed like “Bella” and a few guys even attempted the Edward look… at least I think that’s what they were aiming for!

Bella: You know, your mood swings are kinda giving me whiplash.

Everyone clapped as soon as the trailers began, then they clapped again when the actual movie began. It was a grand old time before one word was spoken.

However, the real magic started as soon as Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart shared the screen. The chemistry between these two is something special, and they lookes just as we knew they would… beautiful!

Edward: Hold on tight spidermonkey.

For me, this is more of a love story than anything else – and a great one, at that. As Edward pointed out, it’s like a love story of a lion and a lamb. But, unlike Bella’s words suggest, I think the lamb’s anything but stupid. I also think the casting director is a freaking genius.

Apparently, they’ve made it official, there WILL be a sequel.  While we already assumed it, it’s incredible to have it in writing.  Hopefully the Cullen’s will be in the next one even more. Each actor/actress did a phenomenal job and I didn’t see one thing to NOT love about this movie.

In fact, I can’t wait to see it again!

James Bond – Quantum of Solace Framed Art Print

I have officially lost faith in professional movie critics. It was on shaky ground anyway, but after Quantum of Solace, there isn’t any trace of faith left. I read that the stars didn’t have any chemistry, that the opening song wasn’t “true” to the James Bond dynasty, that the lead actress was too tan (what?!?!) that the story was weak, and so on.

I have no explanation for what others get or somehow fail to get, but it’s a shame to think that people are paid to do this for a living and can’t even get in the ballpark!

First of all: The theme. Alicia Keys and Jack White do an outstanding job with the theme song. I honestly didn’t know what to expect out of such a collaboration, but it was incredible. The entire opening was dead-on what you’d expect from a James Bond movie. Sexy, stylish, breathtaking… What’s not to love?

Second of all: The leads – Daniel Craig and Olga Kurylenko – imo, had a very, very special chemistry. Generally speaking, whenever I’ve seen a Bond film, I walk away from it wondering who the next “Bond girl” will be. However, for the first time EVER, I walked away wondering if I begged hard enough and petitioned as though my life depended on it – would they, somehow, bring Olga back? She was, by far, my favorite Bond girl ever. In fact, she’s one of my favorite action female characters of all time. The character was a perfect blend of vulnerability and toughness – with just the right amount of each.

Olga Kurylenko actress is as talented as she is beautiful and I’ve loved every movie I’ve seen her in (Hitman, Max Payne, Quantum of Solace). Even so, I had no idea she’d be able to pull off being a Bond girl so effortlessly. I certainly didn’t see her becoming my favorite one ever!

Daniel Craig is perfect in the role as James Bond. As I’ve said on this blog a gazillion times, Pierce Brosnan has always been my favorite Bond. After seeing Quantum of Solace, however, I can say something I never thought I’d ever hear myself saying, “Pierce Brosnan is one of my favorite two James Bonds.” I love Daniel Craig in the role just as much. Never. Saw. That. Coming.

The chase scenes, action, fight scenes, emotional undertows, acting, chemistry, GORGEOUS scenery, sex appeal, Dame Judi Dench, the music…. it all gets straight A+s from me.

No action film fan could walk away from this movie without feeling pumped with excitement. That’s part of the beauty of the film, actually. It’s a movie that stands on it’s own two legs – whether or not the name James Bond was involved or not. It didn’t need “Bond. James Bond.” to stand and it didn’t need “…shaken, not stirred…”

Quantum of Solace is action film-making at its best. It just so happens to also be James Bond at his best as well. To be perfectly honest, Casino Royale wasn’t one of my favorite movies – Bond or otherwise. I didn’t like the relationships whatsoever. I hated the Bond/M relationship (or lack thereof) most of all. (I also wasn’t the least bit impressed with the Bond girl in that film. When she met with her fate, my face did more of a grin than a grimace.)

I’ve actually given Daniel Craig and Olga Kurylenko my ultimate nod of approval after seeing Quantum of Solace. See the Categories in the sidebar? Only a certain amount of names/subjects will fit. I have to make certain that I only include the stars, shows, etc. that absolutely send me over the moon. You’ll now find their names there.

Quantum of Solace is, in my opinion, a thousand times better than Casino Royale. It’s a mind-blowing movie that’s just beautiful front to back. Ignore the newspaper critics and see the movie. You won’t be sorry.

If, somehow you find something to hate about this fantastic movie, I only have one piece of advice. Quit your day job, you missed your calling. You were meant to be a professional movie critic. ;/

I dunno. Sometimes I’m utterly convinced that something’s fishy with major movie critics – as in those who are paid to give their opinions, as opposed to me and my price free words. I realize that two people can see the same movie and one come away thinking they’d just seen a winner and the other laughing at just how bad they thought it was.

For example, my husband and I often disagree on movies. He hated Wanted and Burn After Reading and I absolutely loved them. Wanted’s one of my favorite movies of all-time and B.A.R. was hilarious, with performances by Brad Pitt and George Clooney that I’ll never forget.

Heck, we don’t even agree on who the best James Bond is. B is for Brosnan and B is for Best – I’m just saying…

We completely agreed on Max Payne, though. We both thought it was one of the best movies of the year. Mark Wahlberg has always been one of my husband’s favorite actors, but I’d really never seen him in anything so I didn’t really even have an opinion about him one way or antoher. After Max Payne, though, I more than see what all the fuss is about. This actor has an intensity about him that puts him in a very special league with very special actors.

Normally I don’t read critic’s thoughts before going to a movie – because I don’t want to be swayed one way or another. However, there were several movies I wanted to see this past weekend, so I thought a little homework wouldn’t hurt. After reading about 4 bad reviews, I tried to convince Mr. “If Wahlberg’s in it, I must see it” that Max Payne might be a good one to miss.

He was having none of it.

So, off we went. I honestly was sort of looking forward to a bad movie and a bad review. I hadn’t taken my wrath out on a movie since The Love Guru and I was anxious to give the guru a little company. After some really cool looking trailers, the movie started. By the 10 minute mark, I knew that (as is the case so often) the critics had missed the boat. And the point.

This is an incredible movie with stunts and effects that I’d put on par with any movie EVER. There were about 6 different times when I thought, “That’s one of the coolest stunts I’ve ever seen.” In fact, the character of Max Payne is one of the coolest characters I’ve seen. He’s the sort of character (played by the sort of actor) that you want to see more of.

A few of the critics seemed unable to get past the darkness of the movie. One said that it was a good thing no one had to go to the restroom during the movie, because there wasn’t enough light on the screen to see. Frankly, I don’t care if a movie is dark – I don’t go there to read, I go to see a movie. And as for restroom visits, I learned several years back that going to the potty before a movie starts is the best way to fly.

The darkness set the tone. I mean, this isn’t Kung Fu Panda. The story is an intense storyline – dealing with life, death, revenge, violence… Just where would the lightness come in?

Without being unkind, I think maybe some critics (not all, of course) just didn’t “get” it. That, or, let’s be honest, Mark Wahlberg is somewhat of a controversial actor (from where I sit, he’s just outspoken, but some think that’s a negative). Maybe some critics simply have a closed mind when it comes to him.

Or, maybe they felt the need to chase a little movie ranting around the page. Maybe their “Love Guru” column was getting left out, too.

I don’t know – but I DO know that Max Payne is a darned good movie – one that I can’t imagine an action movie fan not loving. It stormed its way into being one of my favorite movies – not just this year, but ever. As I’ve said before, I often judge a movie by asking myself if I’d ever see it again. I loved Wanted and Iron Man so much that I made return trips. I most certainly would do the same with Max Payne… In fact I’d love to see it again. When there’s so much action, I think a second time would be a great idea.

Not only was Mark Wahlberg sensational as Max Payne, the rest of the cast was superb as well. Mila Kunis has secured herself future leading lady roles and I’ll line up to see anything she’s in. Beau Bridges was also perfect as were Ludacris. Yes, that Ludacris, the rapper – although I now think of him as an actor who happens to sing rather than a singer who happens to act. He more than held his own and I hope to see him in a lot of future films as well.

Chris O’Donnell has fought off the “Robin” curse and turned in a wonderfully tortured performance. He did a great job losing himself in his character. I wish he’d been on the screen more. Someone else I wish had been on the screen more was Olga Kurylenko. I really love this lovely actress. You may remember her as the leading lady in Hitman. She’ll also be in the new James Bond movie.

Nelly Furtado turned in a fantastic performance – albeit she was just in one scene. But, WOW. She has some serious natural talent that I’m certain will be explored in future movies.

Finally, Amaury Nolasco – a 30-something year old actor from Puerto Rico did a great job as a menacing, scowling villain. He was actually on a 2004 list by USA Today of the 26 guys to watch, alongside Justin Timberlake, Ashton Kutcher, Josh Harnett and Jake Gyllenhaal, to name a few.

I honestly have nothing bad to say about this movie. Like all movies, some will like it, some will love it, some will hate it – but as for me, I’ve got nothing but love for it.

One of my favorite types of movies to watch is a horror movie. It can make it challenging sometimes because they’re my husband’s LEAST favorite movie to watch. Put another way, he flat out refuses to watch them.

The most horrific movie I ever drug him to was Snakes On a Plane and he was NOT a happy guy. At one point he goes, “I. Hope. You’re. Happy.” I was.

Fortunately, everyone else in our family loves horror movies, so a few days ago, we gathered in the living room, ate salsa and chips, turned off the lights and watched The Messengers starring Kristen Stewart, Dylan McDermott, and Penelope Ann Miller.

It was really very good. The cool thing about it was that it had an actual plot and a pretty neat, unexpected twist. I was also really happy with the ending – that can’t be said of a lot of horror films.

Kristen Stewart proved herself as a really good actress as the lead character Jess. That bodes well since she’ll have a starring role in the upcoming “Twilight” – which has a great deal of momentum and excitement surrounding it.

Dylan McDermott played Jess’ dad and Penelope Ann Miller played her mom. Jess’ adorable little brother was played by twins Evan and Theodore Turner. You can’t believe how cute these little boys are. Take every adjective you’d ever say about a kitten and mulitply it by 10.

If you’re looking for a fun horror movie to watch during “Halloween Season,” The Messengers is a great choice.

Something else a lot of people might appreciate about this movie is that it isn’t one of those movies that “stays with you” after you watch it – no checking behind doors (Silence of the Lambs), sleeping with the lights on, or nightmares (Snakes on a Plane). Like The Hills Have Eyes, once the movie’s over, it’s over.

Now that I think about it, some people might find that to be a minus!
