James Bond Movie Posters

It’s always fun to kick back with a favorite drink (mine would be Diet Dr. Pepper or Iced Green Tea) and a snack to enjoy a James Bond movie – especially if it’s Pierce Brosnan as 007. Sorry to fans of other Bonds, Brosnan simply happens to be my absolute favorite. He brings just the right amount of humor to the role – not too much and not too little. Sean Connery’s a very, very, very close second. How close? So close that it looks like a tie on most days. The only day it DOESN’T look like a tie is the day I’ve seen Mr. Brosnan in all his 007 glory!

Bond, aside, I love James Bond movies to distraction. Pure fun, plain and simple.

Denzel Washington, Rolling Stone no. 644, November 1992

Denzel Washington is a favorite actor in our household. My husband lists him high amongst his favorite actors, as do I. I believe our oldest daughter, Emily, would be first in line to watch the actor read a New York City phone book. If… that is… she beat my husband to the front of the line.

Below are some of my favorite quotes by Denzel Washington, followed by a few Did You Know’s.

Denzel Washington Quotes

(About “The Book of Eli”) – We shot in New Mexico, and the environment definitely helped. It was bleak. It got chilly and windy. The wind was the biggest deal. You’d have to wash the sand out of your nose and eyes. The world that the movie takes place in, the opportunity to do all this “Blade” kind of martial-arts stuff, working with the Hughes brothers — it was an interesting combination of things.

(About “Training Day”) – My son talked me into doing that movie. He was like, ‘Dad, you’ve never done anything like this.’ I just hadn’t been asked before. The only film that was sort of dark that I’d turned down was “Se7en.” They offered me the Brad Pitt part, but I was like, ‘This is so dark and evil.’ Then when I saw the movie, I was like, ‘Oh, shoot.’

(About “Philadelphia” with Tom Hanks) – (Director) Jonathan Demme said to me, ‘Look, we don’t want your character to go 360 degrees. It’s not like by the end of the movie he’s leading a gay and lesbian parade.’ If we’d done that, it would have let people like this character off the hook. But at the end, he touches (Tom Hanks’ character) – and that’s huge for him. [Pauses, then laughs] I used to mess with Tom. He was barely eating at all, and I would put out, like, 200 Almond Joys in his drawer to give him a hard time. I’d pretend to sneeze and all these Snickers would fall on the ground. I’m sure he laughed all the way up to the podium when he won the Oscar.

(About the whipping scene in “Glory”) – I remember walking around before that scene, just praying and calling on the spirits of all the slaves, because I didn’t know how to play it. I was like, ‘Okay, fellas, just tell me what to do.’ And I went out there with an arrogance. I spit on the ground. I had this attitude and this strength – it all came out of this meditation. It wasn’t calculated. It was organic. That whip actually hurt, but I was like, ‘Don’t let him win.’

I’m very proud to be black, but black is not all I am. That’s my cultural historical background, my genetic makeup, but it’s not all of who I am nor is it the basis from which I answer every question.

(About where he likes to keep his Oscars) “Next to each other.”

(About turning 50) “I have a friend who says ‘the first 50 was for them, this 50′s for me’. I like that. The weirdest part of it, or even the saddest part, is that you start to see people die. You go ‘Man! He wasn’t even that old’. I lost a friend recently who died of a heart attack. He was 58. When I was 20, 58 was old. It ain’t now.”

The quirkiness, the personality, the humor, the confidence… Everything that made James Dean James Dean comes through loud and clear in the Amanti Art Wall Art, James Dean in Sweater 1955 Framed Art Print by Phil Stern above. It’s one of my favorite pictures of the iconic actor – the pose and the photography are just deliciously out of the ordinary.

When it comes to acting and when it comes to movies, Johnny Depp is the man. When it comes to pirates, Captain Jack Sparrow is the pirate. So to say that I’ve been anxiously awaiting the trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean On Strangers Tides would be like saying Rita Hayworth was a female.

Woeful understatement.

Now that I’ve gotten my “trailer fix,” I now enter a desperate state of anxiousness awaiting opening night! Given that it won’t be until May, I’m in for a long haul.

The gorgeous, outstanding, amazing Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie (can you tell she’s an absolute favorite?) is apparently set to play Marilyn Monroe in the movie version of The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog, author Andrew O’Hagan tells the London Telegraph.

What’s more, George Clooney will play Frank Sinatra. Geez, you’d think I cast this movie myself.

If announcements are made linking Johnny Depp, Jack Black, Halle Berry, Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington, Robert Downey, Jr., and Julia Roberts to the project, I’ll know I have a kindred spirit in Hollywood.

Yes, Jack Black….   I so totally met him in NashvilleSkadoosh.

An official announcement has not been made but, according to the Telegraph, “The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog, and of His Friend Marilyn Monroe follows Monroe’s last two years through the eyes of her pet, Maf, a Maltese terrier which was a gift from Sinatra in 1960.”

Angelina Jolie is also being considered for the role of Cleopatra in another movie based on the life of the infamous, controversial figure.

I would be honored [to play the role],” Angelina has said. “But we haven’t gotten the script yet.” The popular star is ALSO linked to a movie in which she’ll be the villain, Maleficent, from Sleeping Beauty.

Busy girl.

The ridiculously beautiful Elizabeth Taylor and the (as described by Elizabeth Taylor, herself) love of her life, Richard Burton, had an epic love affair.  The kind of love affair that simply MUST be made into a movie.

Hollywood is putting together just such a movie and several A-list names are apparently interested in playing the legendary couple.

Angelina Jolie and Catherine Zeta-Jones each know a thing or two about having a larger than life love life in front of the world.  Each gorgeous actress has expressed interest in playing Elizabeth Taylor, while Russell Crowe, Clive Owen and Colin Farrell have their eyes on Richard Burton.

Mike Nichols has expressed interest in directing and all the major studios would apparently love to be a part of this film.

The film will be based on the book, Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and the Marriage of the Century, written by husband and wife team Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger. The book tells the story of Taylor and Burton’s legendary tale of love, divorce and remarriage.

Furious love? What a great title!

Elizabeth Taylor, herself, gave access to never-before-seen materials to the duo during their book research, including Burton’s personal love letters to her. They were also given an unpublished first draft of Taylor’s 1965 autobiography, plus a portfolio of the screen icon’s favorite personal photographs, which are reproduced in the book.

The legendary actress and beauty also allowed interview questions about her and Burton’s long love affair, during which she commented on how he was the great love of her life, the partner in her longest — and shortest — marriages.

The book Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and the Marriage of the Century is out now.

The talented and controversial actor Dennis Hopper passed away recently (April 29, 2010).  His career, like most careers marked by drug and/or alcohol abuse, was pretty much a roller-coaster ride – one which left his fans wondering what all he could have accomplished if not for his demons.

The ruggedly handsome Dennis Hopper was born on May 17, 1936, in Dodge City, Kansas. He knew, at a very young age, that he wanted to be an actor and appeared in a lot of 1950s television shows, such as “Medic” (1954), “Cheyenne” (1955) and “Sugarfoot” (1957).

His first film role was in Johnny Guitar (1954), which was quickly followed by roles in Rebel Without a Cause (1955), Giant (1956) and Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957).  Dennis Hopper became good friends with James Dean, his co-star in Rebel and Giant.  He reportedly was shattered when Dean was killed in the infamous car crash in September of 1955.

Dennis Hopper portrayed a young Napoléon Bonaparte in The Story of Mankind (1957), but, in my opinion,  was at his most deliciously entertaining portraying villains in westerns such as True Grit (1969) and Hang ‘Em High (1968).

In 1969, Dennis Hopper and fellow actor Peter Fonda teamed with writer Terry Southern to write a road movie script. Hopper directed the low-budget film, titled Easy Rider (1969), which starred Fonda, Hopper and a young Jack Nicholson. The film was a huge success.

Hopper admitted that during the 70s he seriously abused various substances, both legal and illegal. Naturally, none of this led to anything good. He appeared in a couple of forgettable European films over the next eight years, before pulling himself up by the bootstraps with a memorable performance alongside Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen in Francis Ford Coppola’s Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now (1979).

He also received acclaim for his work in both acting and direction for Out of the Blue (1980).

In the 80s, Dennis Hopper faced his addictions to drugs and alcohol and enrolled in a rehabilitation program.  This effort paid off with Rumble Fish (1983),  The Osterman Weekend (1983), My Science Project (1985), River’s Edge (1986) and, of course, Blue Velvet (1986).

Dennis Hopper returned to directing in 1988 with the controversial gang film Colors.  He put his acting cap back on for roles in Super Mario Bros. (1993),  True Romance (1993),  Speed (1994/I) Waterworld (1995),  The Night We Called It a Day (2003), The Keeper (2004) and Land of the Dead (2005).

Dennis Hopper died from prostate cancer on May 29, 2010 in Venice Beach, California.

Dennis Hopper Quotes

I’ve been sober now for 18 years. With all the drugs, psychedelics and narcotics I did, I was [really] an alcoholic. Honestly, I only used to do cocaine so I could sober up and drink more. My last five years of drinking was a nightmare. I was drinking a half-gallon of rum with a fifth of rum on the side, in case I ran out, 28 beers a day, and three grams of cocaine just to keep me moving around. And I thought I was doing fine because I wasn’t crawling around drunk on the floor.” (2001)

I’ve been a Republican since Reagan. I voted for Bush and his father. I don’t tell a lot of people, because I live in a city where somebody who voted for Bush is really an outcast.

I should have been dead ten times over. I’ve thought about that a lot. I believe in miracles. It’s an absolute miracle that I’m still around.

(About James Dean) “Jimmy was the most talented and original actor I ever saw work. He was also a guerrilla artist who attacked all restrictions on his sensibility. Once he pulled a switchblade and threatened to murder his director. I imitated his style in art and in life. It got me in a lot of trouble.

There are moments that I’ve had some real brilliance, you know. But I think they are moments. And sometimes, in a career, moments are enough. I never felt I played the great part. I never felt that I directed the great movie. And I can’t say that it’s anybody’s fault but my own.

I made a picture called Super Mario Bros. (1993), and my six-year-old son at the time – he’s now 18 – he said, ‘Dad, I think you’re probably a pretty good actor, but why did you play that terrible guy “King Koopa” in “Super Mario Bros.”?’ and I said, ‘Well Henry, I did that so you could have shoes’, and he said, ‘Dad, I don’t need shoes that badly’.

The Avengers have found their Captain.

After public speculation and endless internet rumors, Captain America has been cast and cast well.  Chris Evans was awarded the coveted role, over Channing Tatum (GI Joe).  I have zilch against Channing Tatum (is that a great name or what?), but I am completely glad that the role went to Chris Evans.  He’s a perfect choice for a superhero – he’s funny, talented, and has the charisma to pull it all off.  Very much like Robert Downey, Jr and Iron Man.

One of the reasons that it was SO important to cast the perfect Steve Rogers (Captain America) is this:  There are nine movies planned!  If they blew it in casting, they’d be sunk.

The New York City-born, World War II-fighting Marvel Comics superhero Captain America is expected to hit theaters in 2011 as Captain America: The First Avenger with Evans in the title role.  You’ll probably best remember Chris Evans as Human Torch / Johnny Storm in both ‘Fantastic Four’ films. He was also in Push, Cellular, The Nanny Diaries, and the sci-fi thriller ‘Sunshine.’

Chris Evans is one of those stars who the public loves – he’s a very likable, unassuming guy and it’s tough (if not impossible) to find anyone who doesn’t like him. This same type of popularity has served Robert Downey, Jr., Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Pierce Brosnan, and Johnny Depp very well. Heath Ledger also had that type of relationship with the public. Sam Worthington is another great example.

Captain America: The First Avenger will launch a story that will tie in the other Marvel films – the two ‘Iron Man’ films, ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ ‘Thor’ – finally culminating with all of them in one film, The Avengers.

This is, in my opinion, the most exciting movie news in a very long time and I can’t wait for the fun to begin.
