Chris Evans as Captain America: Great Choice!

The Avengers have found their Captain.

After public speculation and endless internet rumors, Captain America has been cast and cast well.  Chris Evans was awarded the coveted role, over Channing Tatum (GI Joe).  I have zilch against Channing Tatum (is that a great name or what?), but I am completely glad that the role went to Chris Evans.  He’s a perfect choice for a superhero – he’s funny, talented, and has the charisma to pull it all off.  Very much like Robert Downey, Jr and Iron Man.

One of the reasons that it was SO important to cast the perfect Steve Rogers (Captain America) is this:  There are nine movies planned!  If they blew it in casting, they’d be sunk.

The New York City-born, World War II-fighting Marvel Comics superhero Captain America is expected to hit theaters in 2011 as Captain America: The First Avenger with Evans in the title role.  You’ll probably best remember Chris Evans as Human Torch / Johnny Storm in both ‘Fantastic Four’ films. He was also in Push, Cellular, The Nanny Diaries, and the sci-fi thriller ‘Sunshine.’

Chris Evans is one of those stars who the public loves – he’s a very likable, unassuming guy and it’s tough (if not impossible) to find anyone who doesn’t like him. This same type of popularity has served Robert Downey, Jr., Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Pierce Brosnan, and Johnny Depp very well. Heath Ledger also had that type of relationship with the public. Sam Worthington is another great example.

Captain America: The First Avenger will launch a story that will tie in the other Marvel films – the two ‘Iron Man’ films, ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ ‘Thor’ – finally culminating with all of them in one film, The Avengers.

This is, in my opinion, the most exciting movie news in a very long time and I can’t wait for the fun to begin.
