English Broken Here

by Joi on November 5, 2005

in Lucille Ball

Desi’s fractured English wasn’t written into the scripts. Desi spoke exactly as Ricky did:

Won’t was wunt….stage was staitch…apartment was apparrmin….partner was parner…ever thin was everything…motion pictures was mushing peectures….and Fred Mertz was Frat Mers. (His version of “recognized talent” came out as “recognize Stalin”)

Someone even put a sign on Desi’s dressing-room door, “English broken here.”

Apparently he even had outburst similar to Ricky’s, where half of it came out English and half of it was in Spanish, all of it coming out as one long blur.

“Miraquetienecosalamujeresta!”
