in James Dean

Even more that East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause gave James Dean a sense of belonging and an idea of what a family would feel like.Costars Natile Wood, Sal Mineo,, Jim Backus, and Dennis Hopper were friendly and agreeable and it seems James returned the favor.

Sal Mineo, who played the adoring sidekick to James Dean’s character, later admitted that he adored him just as much off screen as on.

East of Eden opened in March of ‘55, Dean died a mere six months later. During these six months he was the most talked-about star in Hollywood. Everyone had an opinion on the controversial young man from Indiana. He was in such demand that he actually began filming his third film, Giant, before Rebel was even finished.
