Stubborn, But Lovable, Lucy

From “I Loved Lucy” by Lee Tannen:

Lucy could be stubborn. It was her way or the highway. You never won an argument with Lucy and if you were smart you wouldn’t even start one. And if Lucy didn’t know how to do something, she assumed nobody else did either.

These character flaws surfaced only in private and to the most trusting of her friends and family. In all the years I knew Lucy, in the public eye she was never less than charming, considerate, appreciative, and loving. And she never publicly talked badly about anybody she worked with or who worked for her in the business. Except for the story Lucy would now and then tell about how she would have fired Joan Crawford off the set of her show for coming to work drunk each day of rehearsal if Gary had not calmed Lucy down and persuaded her to finish out the week and get the episode in the can. ‘God, that woman was a bitch,” Lucy would say.”
