Dorothy Malone, Written on the Wind (1956)

Dorothy Malone, Written on the Wind

Dorothy Malone

Dorothy Malone, Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall and Robert Stack star in the 1956 film Written on the Wind, directed by Douglas Sirk. Dorothy Malone made a habit of standing out even among A-List stars and she does it again in this film.

She truly was something extraordinary.

You can find Written on the Wind on DVD (Amazon link) or (in some locations, apparently!) watch the movie on Prime Video.

Maureen O’Hara, Paul Hubschmid, and Vincent Price in Bagdad (1949)

Maureen O'Hara and Paul Hubschmid, Bagdad

Maureen O’Hara and Paul Hubschmid

I have a very, very special place in my hearts for Swashbuckling movies. Absolutely love them! I tend to think of them as Westerns on the Sea and enjoy watching them almost as much as I do my beloved Westerns. Swashbucklers are fun, colorful, don’t take themselves (or life) too seriously, are never boring, and are more than happy to sweep you off to a little escapism.

What more could you ask for from a movie?! I mean, maybe a foot massage and mug of hot tea, but aside from that.

Bagdad (1949, directed by Charles Lamont) is a particularly good Swashbuckler- very colorful and lots of fun. The cast includes the stunningly beautiful and talented Maureen O’Hara, Paul Hubschmid, Vincent Price, and John Sutton.

The Harvey Girls (1946): The Cast Directors DREAM Of!

The Harvey Girls: Angela Lansbury, Judy Garland, Preston Foster, and John Hodiak

Preston Foster, Angela Lansbury, Judy Garland, and John Hodiak

The Harvey Girls is a wonderfully entertaining 1946 musical-western. directed by George Sidney, the movie stars Judy Garland, Angela Lansbury, Ray Bolger, John Hodiak, Preston Foster, Cyd Charisse, Marjorie Main, Chill Wills, and Virginia O’Brien.

Every role is filled to perfection. It’s rare you watch a movie and think, “I wouldn’t change a single thing…” but this is definitely one of those cases.

You can find The Harvey Girls on dvd and Blu-ray (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

Angela Lansbury Behind the Scenes of The Harvey Girls

Angela Lansbury, Behind the Scenes of The Harvey Girls (1946)

The extraordinary Angela Lansbury is one of those rare stars everyone seems to love.. and, come on, who can blame us?! She was so incredibly talented, charismatic, colorful, and genuinely lovable and such a gift to those of us who love movies AND those of us who love great classic television.

It’s really, really hard to believe she’s gone, isn’t it? She is and will be missed so much. She’s a great example of the adage, “Live your life so that you will be greatly missed when you’re gone.”

I rewatched The Harvey Girls recently and kept thinking, “I’d forgotten how beautiful she was!” She had a unique, sassy type of beauty that… as far as I’m concerned… is impossible to beat.

The 1946 musical-western was directed by George Sidney and also stars Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, John Hodiak, Preston Foster, Cyd Charisse, Marjorie Main, Chill Wills, and Virginia O’Brien.

You can find The Harvey Girls on dvd and Blu-ray (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

The Spiral Staircase (1946), Starring Dorothy McGuire and Ethel Barrymore

December 28, 2022 By Joi

Dorothy McGuire, The Spiral Staircase

Dorothy McGuire

One of my favorite suspense films is The Spiral Staircase (1946, directed by Robert Siodmak). The wonderful cast includes one of my absolute favorites, Ethel Barrymore, Dorothy McGuire, George Brent, Kent Smith, Rhonda Fleming, Gordon Oliver, Elsa Lanchester (magnificent as always), and Sara Allgood.

The suspense, directing, and acting in this film are sheer perfection. This is the type of movie that makes you fall in love with classic films all over again and I simply could not recommend it enough.

You can watch The Spiral Staircase above or on YouTube. You can also find The Spiral Staircase on dvd or Blu-ray (Amazon link)

Margaret Lockwood, Albert Lieven, and Paul Henreid in Night Train to Munich

December 28, 2022 By Joi

Margaret Lockwood, Albert Lieven, and Paul Henreid, Night Train to Munich (1940)

Margaret Lockwood, Albert Lieven, and Paul Henreid

Night Train to Munich is a great movie, but the thing I most associate it with is the fact it has one of my favorite Paul Henreid performances. Henreid had such a natural gift for “becoming” whatever character he stepped into. He was such a phenomenal actor that he didn’t need extra drama or “scene stealing schemes” to tell the story at hand. He simply became the character who’s face he happened to be wearing at the time – beautifully and (seemingly) effortlessly. He was one of those stars who I’m particularly drawn to – those who never seemed to be acting. They’re simply being the character within the story without trying to command the moment.

I don’t have to tell you how few and far between these stars were and are! Makes them stand out, if you ask me.

The first two Paul Henreid films I saw were Casablanca and Now, Voyager. In spite of sharing the screen with the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Bette Davis, he always stood out to me. There was a quiet strength to his screen presence an it always makes me suspect he had the same presence in real life.

My two most recently seen Paul Henreid films are Night Train to Munich and Stolen Face… again he stands out, yet does so without even trying. It’s almost impossible to put the Henreid effect into words, you simply have to watch his films and his brilliant performances and see for yourself.

As a personal favorite, he is one of the stars I “collect” (photos, cards, movies, etc) and I plan to see his entire filmography. In this case, it’s an absolutely pleasure – he has an excellent filmography and the Henried effect is always something to behold. ~ Joi (“Joy”)

Ann Sheridan, Robert Cummings, and Ronald Reagan: Publicity Photo for King's Row
Ann Sheridan, Robert Cummings, and Ronald Reagan

King’s Row is a film I don’t talk nearly enough about and, given how much I love Ann Sheridan, it’s shocking that I don’t! I’m also a huge fan of Ronald Reagan’s – I find his presence in films to be very agreeable and downright comforting. He always draws me in and makes me care very much about the character he portrays.

I love the chemistry he and Ann shared as well – as evidenced in both this one and Juke Girl (1942).

The wonderful cast of King’s Row also includes Robert Cummings, Claude Rains,  Charles Coburn,  Nancy Coleman, Betty Field, Judith Anderson, and Maria Ouspenskaya.

Maria Ouspenskaya is another star who is always welcome in my den. Love her!

You can find King’s Row on dvd or Blu-ray (Amazon link) or watch on Prime Video.

Judy Garland in a Stunning Presenting Lily Mars Promotional Photo

Judy Garland, Presenting Lily Mars

Judy Garland

I hope all of you had a beautiful and peaceful Christmas holiday! I’m finally slowing down long enough to get back to my old Hollywood blog – and thought, “What better way to get back into the swing of things than with the beautiful Judy Garland?!?!”

This lovely, talented actress, singer, dancer, and entertainer extraordinaire was one in a billion and SO much more beautiful than she, herself, realized. Apparently she once referred to Lana Turner as her idea of beauty and I’d simply love to tell her that she was every bit as beautiful as Lana – which is, obviously, saying something!

Thanks so much for reading my blog – you honor me with your presence so much and I appreciate you to the moon and back. ~ Joi (“Joy“)

“I was afraid that nobody out there could play it and that Preminger would crap it up. But Sinatra was Frankie Machine just the way I wrote him in the book.” ~ Nelson Algren (author, The Man With the Golden Arm)

The 1955 movie was directed by Otto Preminger (who didn’t “crap it up” lmao) and stars Frank Sinatra, Kim Novak, and Eleanor Parker.

You can find The Man with the Golden Arm on dvd or Blu-ray (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

The Wonderful Boris Karloff as The Grinch…. CHEF’S KISS!

December 14, 2022 By Joi

Boris Karloff, How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Boris Karloff

Boris Karloff was the narrator as well as the voice of the Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) and I cannot possibly imagine anyone else doing either.

Was there anything this man couldn’t do?

You can find How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966) on dvd or Blu-ray (Amazon link) or watch the timeless classic on Prime Video.

I love the photo of Boris Karloff behind the scenes of How the Grinch Stole Christmas (below). I’m afraid I don’t know who the woman working with Boris is. If I ever find out, I will certainly come back here and credit her!

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

Read more about Hollywood Yesterday (and see my personal favorites) here!

Old Hollywood Book Reviews

Ann Dvorak: Hollywood's Forgotten Rebel by Christina Rice

I love reading old Hollywood biographies and memoirs as much as I love watching classic movies, and that’s truly saying something!

Pictures of the Day

Maureen O'Hara, The Parent Trap

Maureen O’Hara

The Old Hollywood & Classic TV Pictures of the Day are published as regularly as possible. If I miss a few days, please just know that the husband, daughters, sons-in-law, grandbabies, and/or my cats were demanding my attention. I’ll be honest, nothing comes before any of them! Not even Maureen O’Hara or Henry Fonda.

Priorities, y’all.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!
