Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck, and Preston Sturges: Behind the Scenes of The Lady Eve

Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck, and Preston Sturges Behind the Scenes of The Lady Eve

Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck, and Preston Sturges Behind the Scenes of The Lady Eve (1941)

I’m fairly certain I’ve mentioned this before (and I’m equally certain I’m about to do it again)…. Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck are two of my absolute favorites. Top tier, never say a negative thing about them in my presence favorites. Which is why I am head over heels in love with the fact that they not only made several movies together, but one of them in particular is one of my all time favorite films. Nothing against The Mad Miss Manton (their adorable first film), but The Lady Eve is an absolute work of perfection.

As in every single minute.

I also love the fact that it’s apparent they enjoyed working together. It comes through every scene and it’s just delicious.

Speaking of delicious – I will never (and I mean never) get over the fact that they were holding hands in this adorable behind the scenes picture. I’m also never getting over how cute she is in her hat, but that’s for another day.

Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray: Behind the Scenes of Double Indemnity

Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, Behind the Scenes of Double Indemnity

I love these behind the scenes pictures from Double Indemnity (one of the best and most popular film-noirs ever filmed). The 1944 movie was directed by the wonderful Billy Wilder (pictured below with Barbara Stanwyck) and stars, among others, Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson.

You can find Double Indemnity on dvd (Amazon Link) or watch it on Prime Video.

Barbara Stanwyck, Double IndemnityBarbara Stanwyck: Double Indemnity

One of my favorite actresses, Barbara Stanwyck, also happened to be one of the best actresses (or actors in general, thank you very much) of all time. She was simply phenomenal in each and every role – but it goes beyond that. She had a gift of making everyone around her better or even better. I’ve seen some stars who I never thought were terribly good get in scenes with her and suddenly look like they have a world of talent!

I once had a debate with a woman who said she didn’t think Barbara Stanwyck was one of the all-time greats because she didn’t win a lead actress Emmy. Okay, get out of here with that weak tea argument! Seriously, if you don’t like an actor or actress (whether it’s their overall acting style, their look, their voice, their films… whatever), just say so and stick with that. Don’t venture into ridiculous territory.

For one thing, to a GREAT extent, the committee gives awards to who they WANT to give awards to. They select the actor or actress they want to win – a small committee, not the overall general public who has seen the performance or film.

If this was not the case, why in the world was Halle Berry the first African American to win a lead actress Emmy? If you think she was the first to deserve it, hold still while I call you a doctor because you’re obviously ill. Many things go into selecting the individuals who win the awards each year. And, yes, very often the right one wins – but even then it’s very subjective. There have even been stars who have won who have, themselves, said they didn’t deserve it.

On the flip side, a life-time achievement Oscar (Honorary Award) is one of the greatest awards you can be given. It awards an exemplary career and outstanding body of work. It’s a way of rewarding a star who has greatly contributed to the industry. Barbara Stanwyck was an Honorary Award Winner in 1982 – this was in addition to being nominated for lead actress four separate times for..

  • Sorry, Wrong Number
  • Double Indemnity
  • Ball of Fire
  • Stella Davis

Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray, Double Indemnity

Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck

As you can see, getting me started defending Barbara Stanwyck can take you out into deep, treacherous waters! The story actually had a happy ending, however! When the woman admitted that she had only seen Barbara Stanwyck in three things (a couple of episodes of The Big Valley, Clash of Night, and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers), I told her that these didn’t give her a good overall picture of how wonderful she was. For one thing, in the two films she’d seen, Barbara portrayed such unlikable women who WOULD love her?!? Okay, besides me. Also, like most tv series, The Big Valley needed to have been seen regularly to understand the characters. If you just catch a few, the strength of her character might be off-putting for some – however, more episodes allow you to see her other side AND the fact that she was so strong because she HAD to be.

Life presented the character with no alternative.

I recommended these films and did all but beg her to see at least one, two if possible:

  • The Lady Eve (I all but offered to pay her to see this one lmao)
  • The Woman in Red
  • Christmas in Connecticut
  • Ball of Fire

One month and a half later, she had seen all four (ALL FOUR!) and said she had been wrong about Barbara Stanwyck and was now eager to see all of her films. She said she wondered if she’d been wrong about Bette Davis as well…. and, yes, I recommended some of her films to see. I’ve got your back, too, Bette!

The beautiful pictures in this “If you don’t like Barbara Stanwyck, you are crazy” diatribe are publicity photos for her wonderful 1944 Film-Noir (one of the best and most popular ever made) Double Indemnity. Double Indemnity was directed by the wonderful Billy Wilder and co-stars Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson. You can find Double Indemnity on dvd (Amazon Link) or watch it on Prime Video.

BOTD in 1907, the WONDERFUL Barbara Stanwyck

July 16, 2021 By Joi

Barbara Stanwyck, Union Pacific

Barbara Stanwyck, Union Pacific

One of the greatest actresses of all time is pictured here (and many, many places on this particular old Hollywood blog!)…. the phenomenal Barbara Stanwyck. She’s one of my top 3 all-time favorite film actresses and one of my top 3 all-time favorite television actresses. I’ve also (as you might expect) seen more of her films than any other star. She truly was one in a billion and if you are not familiar with her filmography, I could not possibly recommend her or her films more.

The photos shown here are from one of my favorite Barbara Stanwyck films, Union Pacific. The 1939 drama was directed by the legendary Cecil B. DeMille and co-starred Joel McCrea.

A Few of My Favorite Barbara Stanwyck  Films:

  • The Lady Eve
  • Double Indemnity
  • Ball of Fire
  • Christmas in Connecticut
  • The Woman in Red
  • Union Pacific
  • Baby Face
  • The Mad Miss Manton (off beat but I always enjoy it!)
  • Remember the Night
  • You Belong to Me
  • Golden Boy
  • Gambling Lady
  • Cry Wolf
  • Stella Davis
  • The Strange Love of Martha Ivers
  • Jeopardy
  • Titanic
  • The Gay Sisters
  • Night Nurse

Maybe I should have just said I love them all?? Seriously, even the ones that may not have been as good as the others (Clash by Night and California come to mind) were still very much worth seeing for Barbara Stanwyck alone!

You can find Union Pacific on dvd (Amazon link).

Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck, The Lady Eve

Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck, The Lady Eve

Given that Barbara Stanwyck is one of my top 3 favorite actresses and Henry Fonda is one of my top 3 favorite actors, it’s almost a cinch that I’ll love any movie they made together. The fact that The Lady Eve happens to be an absolutely flawless movie, however, would seal the deal even if (Heaven most absolutely forbid!) two other stars played the leads.

The chemistry between Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda does, I must say, make a perfect movie even more perfect. Add in the always wonderful Charles Coburn and you have a movie that should be must-see viewing for anyone who calls themselves a movie fan.

The 1941 romantic comedy was directed (beautifully) by Preston Sturges. He’s fast becoming one of my favorite directors. The more of his films I see, the more of his genius I recognize.

Barbara Stanwyck

I am LITERALLY in the middle of cooking supper but I just had to publish these two gorgeous pictures of Barbara Stanwyck today. Sweet potatoes and chicken tenders, you can all wait!

These are publicity photos for the excellent The Lady Eve and she is even more stunning than usual.

Now, back to supper while you admire the ridiculously beautiful Barbara! (I want the one above large and framed… I need to make that happen.)

Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck, The Lady Eve

Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck

I am really lucky in that many of my favorites didn’t just co-star in films, but they co-starred in WONDERFUL films… films that, not surprisingly are among my favorites.

  • Maureen O’Hara, John Wayne, and Barry Fitzgerald: The Quiet Man
  • Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda: Yours,  Mine, and Ours
  • Katharine Hepburn and John Wayne: Rooster Cogburn
  • James Stewart and Henry Fonda: The Cheyenne Social Club
  • Maureen O’Hara and Henry Fonda: Spencer’s Mountain
  • Barbara Stanwyck and S.Z. Sakall, Christmas in Connecticut

There are many others, including the absolutely hilarious (and, to be honest, perfect in every way) 1941 comedy The Lady Eve. Starring Barbara Stanwyck, Henry Fonda, and Charles Coburn (love them all to distraction), this is one of the all time GREAT movies.

The Lady Eve was directed by the wonderful Preston Sturges who made the absolute most out of having three of Hollywood’s greatest talents of all time.

You can find The Lady Eve: The Criterion Collection on Amazon. It’s also available on Prime Video!

This is one of my all-time favorite movies and, if you haven’t seen it, it might just need to be the next film you see!

Christmas in Connecticut: One of the Best Christmas Classics of All Time

December 5, 2020 By Joi

Christmas in Connecticut Lobby Card

Christmas in Connecticut

Those of us who love old movies and classic television, each, often have our own personal missions – stars, films, genres, music, and/or television shows we’d love to help become more popular and more celebrated. I have quite a few stars, genres, music, and movies that fall under my own personal missions heading, including Westerns, Jazz, Dorothy Dandridge, Maureen O’Hara, etc.

One of the movies I desperately want to see become better known and more celebrated is Christmas in Connecticut. It’s so fun, festive, beautiful, and boasts such an extraordinary cast – it deserves to be mentioned alongside other greats such as It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, and White Christmas.

I believe that if it were shown on television as frequently as the others, it’d soon become a household name as well.

Directed by Peter Godfrey, the wonderful movie stars Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, Sydney Greenstreet, and one of my favorite character actors ever, the always delightful S.Z. “Cuddles” Sakall.

You can find Christmas in Connecticut (link to the dvd) on Amazon or watch it on Prime Video.

Speaking of Christmas… please forgive me for not having as many updates during the time from Thanksgiving to Christmas as usual. I stay so crazy busy during this time (online shopping, wrapping, baking, cooking, baking, baking, baking…) that it doesn’t leave me much time for anything else!

Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck, The Lady Eve

Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck, The Lady Eve

Usually…. not always, but usually… when one of your favorite actresses and one of your favorite actors team up, the result is a movie you love. It’s certainly the case just about every single time Henry Fonda (one of my absolute favorite actors) teams up with one of my favorite actresses. Barbara Stanwyck, Lucille Ball, Maureen O’Hara, Katharine Hepburn… he and each of these actresses made movie magic!

Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck teamed up more than once and, in my opinion, their best movie together is the wonderful The Lady Eve (1941). It’s simply one of the most entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable films ever made.

Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck, and Preston Sturges

The Lady Eve (1941, directed by Preston Sturges) stars Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck, and Charles Coburn. Four great reasons to see it, even if it wasn’t a wonderful movie! Fortunately, it isn’t just wonderful – it’s absolutely one of the best.

Hilarious, original, unique, and boasts three leads that are completely on top of their game.

(Continued Below the adorable picture…)

Behind the Scenes of The Lady Eve

The Chemistry between Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda is palpable and adds an underlying current to an already electric movie. The dialogue, the wardrobe, the acting, the directing… everything about this one is a 100 on a scale of 1-10 and if you’ve never seen it, I hope you will asap. If you have seen it, see it again! Trust me, it gets EVEN better each time you watch it.

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!
