It’s a Wonderful Life: Donna Reed and James Stewart Publicity Stills

December 12, 2021 By Joi

Donna Reed and James Stewart, It's a Wonderful Life Publicity Still
James Stewart and Donna Reed

I’m known for many obsessions and all-encompassing passions in my life, but few are as strong or as identifying for me as my love for It’s a Wonderful Life. This film and its stars (particularly James Stewart and Donna Reed) are two of the reasons I became as infatuated with Classic Hollywood as I did at an early age. They’re also some of the main reasons that… once I figuratively moved into old Hollywood, I’ve never seen any reason to leave.

As impossible as it is to believe, It’s a Wonderful Life was not a hit when it came out. While, today, we recognize it as absolutely one of the best movies ever made, when it was released in 1946, it didn’t catch on in the least.

Want to know one of the most outrageous and absolutely WRONG reasons some foolishly gave for its lack of success? Hold on to your seats, the ridiculousness may make you keel over… some faulted Donna Reed! The beautiful, strong-willed and determined HEART of the movie. Oh, sure… let’s blame her!

How ridiculous could they have been? She’s one of the best things about the entire movie and MORE than held her own with James Stewart and the rest of the older, more experienced cast.

The truth of the matter is the “fault” is easy to find. Unlike ZuZu’s petals… it’s hiding in plain sight.

Before getting to it, let me just share this: The day after Christmas, I take all of our decorations down. While I put them up very early each year (the day after Halloween), when Christmas Day is over, the season is over as far as I’m concerned and, as much as I love(d) it, it’s time to look toward January and the New Year.

By the time January rolls around, Christmas decorations and that year’s memories have been lovingly and carefully boxed up and stored. The last thing on my mind (or the minds of most people in January) is Christmas.

Guess what month they released It’s a Wonderful Life? JANUARY! Can you imagine the lack of vision, planning, and forethought? No one… absolutely no one (not even Santa!) is thinking about Christmas in January. In fact, there is an innate hesitancy TO think about it. After all, we just went through the cost, preparations, emotions, and extra work to make the season bright and wonderful – we don’t want to think about that for some time.

January. They released a glorious Christmas movie in January, then wondered why it wasn’t a box office smash.

Okay, rant over. But whenever I read that ANYONE even hinted at blaming Donna Reed it makes my blood boil. If it had been the hit it deserved to be, would she have been singled out as the reason? You know, I know, and we all know that wouldn’t be the case. It’d be James Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, and director Frank Capra who’d have gotten the credit.

Wait… I said rant over didn’t I? Oops.

Donna Reed and James Stewart

At least the magical, one in a million film finally got the love and credit it deserved. Donna Reed, James Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, Henry Travers, Frank Capra (director), Thomas Mitchell, Beulah Bondi, Ward Bond, Frank Albertson, Gloria Grahame, Frank Faylen, H.B. Warner, Todd Karns, Mary Treen, Virginia Patton, Samuel Hines, Lillian Randolph, William Edmunds, Robert J. Anderson, Argentina Brunetti, Jean Gale, Jeanine Ann Roose, Georgie Nokes, Ronnie Ralph, Sheldon Leonard, Karolyn Grimes, Larry Simms, Jimmy Hawkins, and the rest of the cast give us one of our most SPECIAL gifts each Christmas.

You can buy It’s a Wonderful Life on dvd (Amazon link) or watch on Prime Video. It’s funny, even though I’ve owned the movie on dvd for many, many years, I still watch it every single time it’s shown on television. I am simply wildly in love with this movie and with everything about it.

It’s a Wonderful Life Lobby Card

Sorry for the lack of posts (the Pictures of the Day ceased to be of the day completely!) this week – I have been battling the worst case of bronchitis I’ve ever had. Very, very difficult to work at the computer when you can’t stop coughing and your body seems to have completely forgotten how to breathe!

Saw the doctor, got several medicines, and a shot that… shall we say… bruised the backside!… so I am on the mend. Pictures of the day and mayhem will now resume. And what better way to resume than with one of my favorite all-time films and two of my all-time favorite stars… It’s a Wonderful Life with James Stewart and Donna Reed?!

Donna Reed and James Stewart, It’s a Wonderful Life (and a Wonderful Film!)

Donna Reed and James Stewart, It's a Wonderful Life

Donna Reed and James Stewart Dancing the Charleston in It’s a Wonderful Life

The beautiful and talented Donna Reed was only 25 when she filmed It’s a Wonderful Life. Twenty-Five! It was her first leading-lady role and here she was, being thrown into a role opposite the legendary James Stewart in a film directed by the legendary Frank Capra.

And all she did was simply give one of cinema’s most memorable characters and performances. She’s part of movie history in what is considered one of the best (and most-loved) movies ever made.

About filming the iconic film, Donna Reed said, “I did things I had never done before – danced the Charleston a little, sang a little, fell over backward in a swimming pool… played light comedy as well as drama, aged from 18 to 40 years – and (Capra) made it all look so simple and easy on-screen.”

As did you, lovely Donna!

John Wayne and Donna Reed, They Were Expendable (1945)

John Wayne and Donna Reed, They Were Expendable

John Wayne and Donna Reed

I have always been a very big Donna Reed fan – in fact, back when The Donna Reed Show was shown in syndication on television (I wish it still was!), I never missed an episode. I also watch and rewatch her in It’s a Wonderful Life each December at least three times.

For whatever reasons, however, I’m really only recently discovering her other films. They’re wonderful and she is even more so. She was a stunningly beautiful and wonderfully talented actress. I wish she had been given even more films and even more challenging roles. When she was given a great role, she absolutely hit it out of the park!

She has become one of my top 5 all-time favorite movie actresses (she was already in the top five for television actresses… she, Lucille Ball, and Barbara Stanwyck top both lists!).

As for Mr. John Wayne… well, suffice to say he’s been one of my top favorite actors since I knew what an actor was.

Probably before then!

The fact that these two dynamic stars teamed up for a film makes me blissfully happy. The fact that this film, They Were Expendable, is outstanding is icing on the cake.

They Were Expendable (1945) was directed by John Ford and also stars Robert Montgomery, Jack Holt, Ward Bond, Marshall Thompson, and Cameron Mitchell.

You can find They Were Expendable on dvd (Amazon link) or watch on Prime Video.

Donna Reed, George Sanders, and Hurd Hatfield: The Picture of Dorian Gray

Donna Reed, George Sanders, and Hurd Hatfield, The Picture of Dorian Gray

Donna Reed, George Sanders, and Hurd Hatfield

Every now and again a movie’s cast will leave me completely gobsmacked. I find myself wondering, “Did the casting department, producer, and director even KNOW what kind of magic they were assembling at the time?!”

The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945, directed by Albert Lewin) hits me this way each time I see it. Hurd Hatfield (who, for crying out loud, should be a household name with that talent), Donna Reed, George Sanders, Angela Lansbury, and Peter Lawford lead a cast that is spellbinding.

If you’ve never seen this wonderful movie or if it’s been quite some time, I hope you’ll seek it out and revisit it. You won’t be sorry.

You can buy the wonderful The Picture of Dorian Gray on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the film on Prime Video. I need this one for my Donna Reed collection but I think I MUST watch it on Prime Video tonight to hold me over. This is one outstanding film.

Donna Reed and Hurd Hatfield in The Picture of Dorian Gray

Donna Reed and Hurd Hatfield

In one of the most mesmerizing films from classic Hollywood, The Picture of Dorian Gray, a detestable man (Dorian Gray, played to perfection by Hurd Hatfield) somehow keeps his youthful appearance and innocent looks. That’s where the “Picture” comes into play. It slowly but surely reveals to everyone the ugliness that lies within Dorian Gray.

The cast also includes Donna Reed, Angela Lansbury, George Sanders, and Peter Lawford. Unfortunately (in spite of being absolutely radiant in the film and adding so much to the magic), Donna Reed apparently didn’t enjoy making this film. She had originally been promised the role that went to Angela Lansbury, Sibyl Vane.

You can buy the wonderful The Picture of Dorian Gray on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the film on Prime Video.

One of my favorite movies of all-time is also one of the ones that launched my extreme love and passion for old movies – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946).

James Stewart, Donna Reed and Thomas Mitchell – It’s a Wonderful Life

As it gets closer to Christmas, watch for the pictures of the day to have one thing on their minds! It’s a Wonderful Life is one of my favorite movies of all time and happens to star some of my favorite actors and actresses. One of these is the wonderful Thomas Mitchell. He was an extraordinary actor and made great films EVEN better simply by showing up.

He was absolutely perfect in the role of forgetful Uncle Bill in It’s a Wonderful Life. Seriously, you simply cannot imagine another actor in this role!

Donna Reed: Gorgeous Publicity Photo for The Picture of Dorian Gray

Donna Reed, The Picture of Dorian Gray

Donna Reed

This promotional picture of beautiful Donna Reed (one of my favorite actresses for as long as I can remember!) is one of my favorite photos of the actress. It showcases her stunningly beautiful smile, eyes, and bone structure. She was unquestionably one of the most beautiful (as well as talented) actresses ever.

While Donna Reed seems best-remembered for It’s a Wonderful Life and her great television series The Donna Reed Show, she has a very, very fine and wide-ranging filmography.  I wish more of her films would be shown on television so more could come to know what a gifted, versatile actress she was.

If only TCM would make her one of their famous Summer Under the Stars! Or even a Star of the Month and focus on her films and career. I would be in 7th Heaven.

You can buy the completely mesmerizing  The Picture of Dorian Gray on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the film on Prime Video.

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

The Old Hollywood & Classic TV Pictures of the Day are published as regularly as possible. Not even Maureen O’Hara or Henry Fonda.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!
