Ethel Waters
There are great smiles, then there was Ethel Water’s smile… one of the warmest, loveliest smiles ever. Her smile lit up her whole face! She’s one of those stars that fascinates me and I would love to learn more about her. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot written on this talented lady, yet. Hopefully a talented researcher and author will take care of that for me!
“Oh, I can get angry and curse a little (of course, the Lord look the other way). I don’t take the Lord’s name in vain, don’t get that idea. But I have a vocabulary without the Lord’s name that could raise the roof. You understand what I’m saying, sugar?” ~ Ethel Waters
Cabin in the Sky (1943) is, unquestionably, one of my favorite musicals. It’s a fun, very entertaining film, directed to perfection by Vincente Minnelli. In addition to the wonderful Ethel Waters, the cast also includes Eddie Anderson, Lena Horne, Rex Ingram, Louis Armstrong, Mantan Moreland (love him!), and Oscar Polk. This was the last film Oscar Polk made. He died, far too young, in 1949 at the age of 49 after being struck by a car.
Cabin in the Sky is one of the most unforgettable musicals you’ll ever see. If you haven’t seen it, I very much hope you’ll seek it out. It gets EVEN better each time you watch it!
