Ann Sheridan, Robert Cummings, and Ronald Reagan: Publicity Photo for King's Row
Ann Sheridan, Robert Cummings, and Ronald Reagan

King’s Row is a film I don’t talk nearly enough about and, given how much I love Ann Sheridan, it’s shocking that I don’t! I’m also a huge fan of Ronald Reagan’s – I find his presence in films to be very agreeable and downright comforting. He always draws me in and makes me care very much about the character he portrays.

I love the chemistry he and Ann shared as well – as evidenced in both this one and Juke Girl (1942).

The wonderful cast of King’s Row also includes Robert Cummings, Claude Rains,  Charles Coburn,  Nancy Coleman, Betty Field, Judith Anderson, and Maria Ouspenskaya.

Maria Ouspenskaya is another star who is always welcome in my den. Love her!

You can find King’s Row on dvd or Blu-ray (Amazon link) or watch on Prime Video.

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn Make Their Own Kind of Magic in Silver River (1948)

September 8, 2022 By Joi

Silver River with Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn

There are many film couples who made movie magic:

  • Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne
  • Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck
  • Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
  • Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire
  • Ruby Dee and Sidney Poitier
  • Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland
  • etc etc etc…

But one of the couples I’d put on my list of favorites (right up there with the all-time greats) is one others may overlook…. Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn. They didn’t make NEARLY enough movies together, but I absolutely cherish the few they did make –  with Silver River being my favorite. Silver River (1948) was directed by the wonderful Raoul Walsh and also stars Thomas Mitchell, Tom D’Andrea (love him in this role… well, actually, I love him in everything), and Bruce Bennett.

You can find Silver River on dvd (Amazon link). I absolutely love it.

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn in Silver River

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn… if these two names don’t conjure up entertainment for a classic film lover, I’m not sure what names would! They’re two of my personal favorites and one of my favorite movie “onscreen” couples. They were wonderful together – so much chemistry and seemed to love working together.

Silver River was one of the films they made together and it’s a great one. The 1948 Western was directed by Raul Walsh and also stars Thomas Mitchell (always wonderful), Bruce Bennett, and Tom D’Andrea (LOVE him in this role).

You can find Silver River on dvd (Amazon link).

The Doughgirls Lobby Card

Ann Sheridan, Jane Wyman, and Alexis Smith

The Doughgirls is an especially fun 1944 comedy, starring one of my top 3 favorite actresses, Ann Sheridan. Few share the top spot alongside my beloved Maureen O’Hara and Lucille Ball, but Miss Sheridan has her spot cemented.

The Doughgirls was directed by James V. Kern and also stars Eve Arden, Alexis Smith, Jane Wyman, Jack Carson, and Charles Ruggles. Wonderful cast, wonderful movie.

You can find The Doughgirls on dvd (Amazon link).

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn in Silver River

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn are, individually, two of my favorite stars. They’re also, combined, one of my favorite movie couples. I love their chemistry a great deal and, personally, think she made as wonderful a leady lady for him as Olivia de Havilland did… which is, of course, absolutely saying something!

Silver River was directed by Raul Walsh and also stars Thomas Mitchell (always wonderful), Bruce Bennett, and Tom D’Andrea (LOVE him in this role).

You can find Silver River on dvd (Amazon link). It’s a very, very good Western with an outstanding cast.

Ann Sheridan and John Litel, Alcatraz Island Publicity Photo

Ann Sheridan and John Litel, Alcatraz Island

Ann Sheridan and John Litel, Alcatraz Island

Ann Sheridan and John Litel star in the 1937 crime drama, Alcatraz Island. Directed by William C. McGann, the movie also stars Mary Maguire and Gordon Oliver.

This was the first film set in the prison on Alcatraz Island, which had opened in 1934 and is a better film than its lack of popularity would lead you to believe.

Michael Curtiz, Ann Sheridan and James Cagney Behind the Scenes

Many times… not always, mind you… but MANY times when one of your top 3 favorite actresses, one of your top 5 favorite actors, and one of your top 4 favorite directors team up for a movie – magic happens. It’s certainly the case, for me, with Angels with Dirty Faces. Ann Sheridan, James Cagney, and Michael Curtiz are favorites of mine and I LOVE that they created such an iconic and wonderful movie together.

Ann Sheridan: One of My Favorite Publicity Photos EVER EVER EVER……

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan

The beautiful, talented, and magnificent in every way Ann Sheridan (sadly) isn’t the household name many other stars are from old Hollywood. While most people know very well who Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, James Dean, Audrey Hepburn, and Humphrey Bogart are… if you ask the average person to identify Ann Sheridan, they’d be unable to do so.

Unacceptable!

She’s one of my favorites and is one of the stars I am on a personal crusade to publicize every change I get. She was far too talented and beautiful to be overlooked by anyone.

The photo above is currently my Twitter profile photo because I love it so much. Granted, I change the profile pic often (to bring more attention to a variety of favorite stars), but I have a  feeling Ann Sheridan will be my companion for quite a while. I simply LOVE this photo.

This is a publicity picture for her 1940 film, It All Came True. The comedy/drama was directed by Lewis Seiler and co-stars Humphrey Bogart, Jeffrey Lynn, Zasu Pitts, and Una O’Connor.

You can find the wonderful It All Came True on dvd… with a GORGEOUS cover (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

Amazon also has a beautiful “Window Card” for the film, featuring beautiful Ann Sheridan (pictured below). I HAVE to have this one… no doubt about it.

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

Old Hollywood Book Reviews

Ann Dvorak: Hollywood's Forgotten Rebel by Christina Rice

I love reading old Hollywood biographies and memoirs as much as I love watching classic movies, and that’s truly saying something!

Pictures of the Day

Maureen O'Hara, The Parent Trap

Maureen O’Hara

The Old Hollywood & Classic TV Pictures of the Day are published as regularly as possible. If I miss a few days, please just know that the husband, daughters, sons-in-law, grandbabies, and/or my cats were demanding my attention. I’ll be honest, nothing comes before any of them! Not even Maureen O’Hara or Henry Fonda.

Priorities, y’all.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!
