Ethel Waters and Eddie Anderson, Promotional Picture for Cabin in the Sky (1943)

Ethel Waters and Eddie Anderson, Cabin in the Sky

Ethel Waters and Eddie Anderson

Cabin in the Sky (1943) is, unquestionably, one of my favorite musicals. It’s a fun, delightful, musically perfect, very entertaining film, directed to perfection by Vincente Minnelli. I used to hate that it wasn’t shown more on television, where new audiences could fall in love with it but (fortunately!) it’s being shown more often on TCM.

Thank goodness, because this one is extra, extra special.

The outstanding cast includes Eddie Anderson, Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Rex Ingram, Louis Armstrong, Mantan Moreland (love him!), and Oscar Polk. Tragically Oscar Polk was killed six years later (at the age of 49) when he was hit by an automobile, making this his last role.

You can buy Cabin in the Sky on dvd (Amazon link) on watch it on Prime Video.

Lena Horne and Eddie Anderson: Great Behind the Scenes Photo from Cabin in the Sky

Lena Horne and Eddie Anderson - Behind the Scenes of Cabin in the Sky

Lena Horne and Eddie Anderson

Cabin in the Sky is a wonderfully fun 1943 musical, directed by Vincente Minnelli. It’s excellent cast includes Eddie Anderson, Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Rex Ingram, Louis Armstrong, Mantan Moreland, and Oscar Polk.

That’s what I call one heckuva cast. SO much talent.

This behind the scenes picture is spectacular – look how unbelievably beautiful Lena was! She positively glows and has such a regal posture. Truly one of the most beautiful stars we’ve ever had. She’s wonderful as the beautiful Georgia Brown in Cabin in the Sky and Eddie Anderson gives one of my favorite performances of all time as Little Joe. The man’s gift for humor was immense.

You can buy Cabin in the Sky on dvd (Amazon link) on watch it on Prime Video!

This photo of Eddie Anderson is honestly just too, too cool. I’d love it blown up, framed, and hanging on a wall – it’d make any room instantly cooler!

Cabin in the Sky (1943) is, unquestionably, one of my favorite musicals, and not just because it stars my much-loved Lena Horne! It’s a fun, very entertaining film, directed to perfection by Vincente Minnelli. The movie includes stars Eddie Anderson, Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Rex Ingram, Louis Armstrong, Mantan Moreland (love him!), and Oscar Polk.

Cabin in the Sky Lobby Card: Cannot Begin to Tell You How Much I Love This One…

July 8, 2020 By Joi

Cabin in the Sky Lobby Card

I love when a Lobby Card or movie poster don’t just capture the actors and actresses involved but also capture the “energy” of the film. This lobby card for the wonderful Cabin in the Sky does just that. This is a very unique, colorful, and bold musical – one that very much marches to the beat of its own drum. This particular lobby card pretty much announces that to the world!

If you’ve never seen this one, I hope you get a chance to check it out soon. Lena Horne, Ethel Waters, Eddie Anderson, Rex Ingram (outstanding!), and the rest of the cast are breathtakingly good and this film deserves so much more attention than it currently gets.

I’m kind of on a mission to make that happen!

Watch Cabin in the Sky on Amazon Prime or add the dvd to your collection. The dvd linked to, on Amazon, has some of the wonderful artwork above on the cover. Gotta have it for my collection, even though I already have the dvd!

Eddie Anderson, Lena Horne, and Rex Ingram - Behind the Scenes of Cabin in the Sky

Eddie Anderson, Lena Horne, and Rex Ingram – Behind the Scenes of Cabin in the Sky

I’ve professed my love countless times for “behind the scenes” pictures and this particular one is a perfect example of why I love them so much! You can get such a great look at  the stars’ personalities with these photos. I love Eddie Anderson’s adorable face, Lena Horne’s beautiful and teasing smile, and Rex Ingram’s enjoyment of the whole thing!

If you’ve never seen Cabin in the Sky, I hope you’ll find it as soon as possible. It may sound corny… and I apologize if it does… but it is simply a delightful film. The talent is through the roof, the joy is palpable, and it’s simply a very, very, very “feel good” movie.

The Cabin in the Sky Lobby Card… LOVE IT!

May 25, 2020 By Joi

Cabin in the Sky Lobby Card with Lena Horne

Cabin in the Sky Lobby Card: Rex Ingram, Kenneth Spencer, Eddie Anderson, and… of course, Lena Horne!

I’ve already declared my undying love for Lobby Cards – the design, the font, the colors… I am obsessed. I’ve begun collecting them and am having the time of my life.

The one above is one I’d like to get my mitts on. First of all, I collect anything and everything related to Lena Horne, so this is a must have for my collection. Also, I love the colors and the overall design of this lobby card. Bonus… the movie, itself, is outstanding!

You can find Cabin in the Sky (link to dvd on Amazon) on dvd or Watch on Prime. I haven’t been able to find any Cabin in the Sky lobby cards on Amazon yet, but there are a few gorgeous posters – including one very similar to the lobby card above as well as one (shown below) featuring the wonderful art on the front of the dvd.

As you’d imagine, the collector in me is beside herself.

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

Ann Dvorak: Hollywood's Forgotten Rebel by Christina Rice

I love reading old Hollywood biographies and memoirs as much as I love watching classic movies, and that’s truly saying something!

Pictures of the Day

Maureen O'Hara, The Parent Trap

Maureen O’Hara

The Old Hollywood & Classic TV Pictures of the Day are published as regularly as possible. If I miss a few days, please just know that the husband, daughters, sons-in-law, grandbabies, and/or my cats were demanding my attention. I’ll be honest, nothing comes before any of them! Not even Maureen O’Hara or Henry Fonda.

Priorities, y’all.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!
