BOTD in 1905, One of the Best Actors of All Time… Henry Fonda

James Stewart and Henry Fonda in The Cheyenne Social Club

James Stewart and Henry Fonda in The Cheyenne Social Club

Henry Fonda has, along with James Stewart, been my favorite actor for as long as I can remember. I must have seen It’s a Wonderful Life and Spencer’s Mountain around the same time as a little girl, because they ascended to the top of the list at the same time and neither has ever slipped. In fact, the more films of theirs I saw, the better foothold they established!

Henry Fonda was born on this day in Nebraska in 1905.  His first film was The Farmer Takes a Wife in 1935, followed by Way Down East and  I Dream too Much (also 1935).

Whenever someone asks for recommendations when tackling an individual star’s’ filmography, Henry Fonda is always one of the first names out of my mouth or off of my fingertips. He made some extraordinary movies and his filmography is simply a great deal of fun. He never failed to give a wonderful performance and almost always walked away as the biggest standout and star of the movie he was in. Some stars, of course, hung with him and maintained an equal footing (Barbara Stanwyck, James Stewart, Ann Dvorak, Vincent Price, Victor Mature, Bette Davis, Maureen O’Hara..) but none ever outshined him.

In all fairness, Barbara Bed Geddes came darn close in The Long Night!

Henry Fonda, simply put, was one of the most talented actors to ever step in front of a camera. If it weren’t for his friend and partner at the top of my personal favorite’s list, James Stewart, I would say he was the absolute best male actor to ever live. As it is, he has company in this regard – and I’m sure he wouldn’t mind one bit.

Merry Christmas from My Family to You and to Everyone You Love!

It's a Wonderful Life

It’s a Wonderful Life

This week is going to be a beautiful whirlwind of wrapping presents, baking cookies, making candy, and running around like the overcaffeinated elf that I am! So, needless to say the Pictures of the Day will not be regular whatsoever. Truth be told, this may well be the last blog post until the day after Christmas.

In that event, I very much want it to be devoted to two things…

  • One of the most beautiful, special, and greatest films ever made, It’s a Wonderful Life.
  • Wishing you a healthy, happy, joyful, and peaceful Christmas!

You honor me by visiting Hollywood Yesterday and I wish you and yours the best wishes from the bottom  of my heart. ~ Joi (“Joy”)

You can buy It’s a Wonderful Life on dvd (Amazon link) or watch on Prime Video. It’s funny, even though I’ve owned the movie on dvd for many, many years, I still watch it every single time it’s shown on television. I am simply wildly in love with this movie and with everything about it.

James Stewart and Henry Fonda: The Cheyenne Social Club (I LOVE this film so much!)

James Stewart and Henry Fonda, The Cheyenne Social Club

James Stewart and Henry Fonda

If you know anything about my old Hollywood favorites, you know that James Stewart and Henry Fonda are two of my favorite all-time actors (male… I make this distinction because many people have taken to calling ALL actors and actresses “actors”). While I have other favorites (John Wayne, Melvyn Douglas, James Garner, Humphrey Bogart to name a few), these two never budge from the top two spots.

It just occurred to me, this seems like a particularly unusual post among all the Christmas ones, doesn’t it?! Can’t help it… I’m unusual, myself, so I gravitate to the unusual.

I recently revisited this wonderful movie, which explains why it’s on my mind. It’s absolutely wonderful and the entire cast is outstanding – particularly Henry Fonda, James Stewart, Shirley Jones, and Sue Ane Langdon.

Shirley Jones, The Cheyenne Social Club

Shirley Jones

The wonderful James Stewart and Henry Fonda (who happened to be very close friends) made three movies together:

  • On Our Merry Way (1948)
  • Firecreek (1968)
  • The Cheyenne Social Club (1970)

I wish they had made more, but this fan will take what she can get!

The hilarious and FUN The Cheyenne Social Club (1970) is my favorite of the three but, as you could guess, I love all three. The Cheyenne Social Club was directed by the legendary actor Gene Kelly (not gonna lie, this has always fascinated me) and also stars Shirley Jones, Sue Ane Langdon, Dabs Greer, Elaine Devry, Jackie Joseph (best-remembered as Ramona, Ernest T. Bass’ girlfriend on The Andy Griffith Show), Jackie Russell, and Sharon DeBord.

It’s a Wonderful Life: Donna Reed and James Stewart Publicity Stills

December 12, 2021 By Joi

Donna Reed and James Stewart, It's a Wonderful Life Publicity Still
James Stewart and Donna Reed

I’m known for many obsessions and all-encompassing passions in my life, but few are as strong or as identifying for me as my love for It’s a Wonderful Life. This film and its stars (particularly James Stewart and Donna Reed) are two of the reasons I became as infatuated with Classic Hollywood as I did at an early age. They’re also some of the main reasons that… once I figuratively moved into old Hollywood, I’ve never seen any reason to leave.

As impossible as it is to believe, It’s a Wonderful Life was not a hit when it came out. While, today, we recognize it as absolutely one of the best movies ever made, when it was released in 1946, it didn’t catch on in the least.

Want to know one of the most outrageous and absolutely WRONG reasons some foolishly gave for its lack of success? Hold on to your seats, the ridiculousness may make you keel over… some faulted Donna Reed! The beautiful, strong-willed and determined HEART of the movie. Oh, sure… let’s blame her!

How ridiculous could they have been? She’s one of the best things about the entire movie and MORE than held her own with James Stewart and the rest of the older, more experienced cast.

The truth of the matter is the “fault” is easy to find. Unlike ZuZu’s petals… it’s hiding in plain sight.

Before getting to it, let me just share this: The day after Christmas, I take all of our decorations down. While I put them up very early each year (the day after Halloween), when Christmas Day is over, the season is over as far as I’m concerned and, as much as I love(d) it, it’s time to look toward January and the New Year.

By the time January rolls around, Christmas decorations and that year’s memories have been lovingly and carefully boxed up and stored. The last thing on my mind (or the minds of most people in January) is Christmas.

Guess what month they released It’s a Wonderful Life? JANUARY! Can you imagine the lack of vision, planning, and forethought? No one… absolutely no one (not even Santa!) is thinking about Christmas in January. In fact, there is an innate hesitancy TO think about it. After all, we just went through the cost, preparations, emotions, and extra work to make the season bright and wonderful – we don’t want to think about that for some time.

January. They released a glorious Christmas movie in January, then wondered why it wasn’t a box office smash.

Okay, rant over. But whenever I read that ANYONE even hinted at blaming Donna Reed it makes my blood boil. If it had been the hit it deserved to be, would she have been singled out as the reason? You know, I know, and we all know that wouldn’t be the case. It’d be James Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, and director Frank Capra who’d have gotten the credit.

Wait… I said rant over didn’t I? Oops.

Donna Reed and James Stewart, It's a Wonderful Life Publicity Still

Donna Reed and James Stewart

At least the magical, one in a million film finally got the love and credit it deserved. Donna Reed, James Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, Henry Travers, Frank Capra (director), Thomas Mitchell, Beulah Bondi, Ward Bond, Frank Albertson, Gloria Grahame, Frank Faylen, H.B. Warner, Todd Karns, Mary Treen, Virginia Patton, Samuel Hines, Lillian Randolph, William Edmunds, Robert J. Anderson, Argentina Brunetti, Jean Gale, Jeanine Ann Roose, Georgie Nokes, Ronnie Ralph, Sheldon Leonard, Karolyn Grimes, Larry Simms, Jimmy Hawkins, and the rest of the cast give us one of our most SPECIAL gifts each Christmas.

You can buy It’s a Wonderful Life on dvd (Amazon link) or watch on Prime Video. It’s funny, even though I’ve owned the movie on dvd for many, many years, I still watch it every single time it’s shown on television. I am simply wildly in love with this movie and with everything about it.

It's a Wonderful Life Lobby Card

It’s a Wonderful Life Lobby Card

Sorry for the lack of posts (the Pictures of the Day ceased to be of the day completely!) this week – I have been battling the worst case of bronchitis I’ve ever had. Very, very difficult to work at the computer when you can’t stop coughing and your body seems to have completely forgotten how to breathe!

Saw the doctor, got several medicines, and a shot that… shall we say… bruised the backside!… so I am on the mend. Pictures of the day and mayhem will now resume. And what better way to resume than with one of my favorite all-time films and two of my all-time favorite stars… It’s a Wonderful Life with James Stewart and Donna Reed?!

Donna Reed and James Stewart, It’s a Wonderful Life (and a Wonderful Film!)

Donna Reed and James Stewart, It's a Wonderful Life

Donna Reed and James Stewart Dancing the Charleston in It’s a Wonderful Life

The beautiful and talented Donna Reed was only 25 when she filmed It’s a Wonderful Life. Twenty-Five! It was her first leading-lady role and here she was, being thrown into a role opposite the legendary James Stewart in a film directed by the legendary Frank Capra.

And all she did was simply give one of cinema’s most memorable characters and performances. She’s part of movie history in what is considered one of the best (and most-loved) movies ever made.

About filming the iconic film, Donna Reed said, “I did things I had never done before – danced the Charleston a little, sang a little, fell over backward in a swimming pool… played light comedy as well as drama, aged from 18 to 40 years – and (Capra) made it all look so simple and easy on-screen.”

As did you, lovely Donna!

James Stewart, Ziegfeld Girl (1941, directed by Robert Z. Leonard)

James Stewart

James Stewart wasn’t just one of stars of the 1941 musical drama Ziegfeld Girl, he was (in my opinion) one of the main reasons the movie is as good as it is. He and Lana Turner stand out in a cast full of standouts! Their chemistry was palpable and their story spellbinding.

You can find Ziegfeld Girl (Amazon link) on dvd or watch the movie on Prime Video.

James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, The Shop Around the Corner

James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, The Shop Around the Corner

James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan

A movie I always associate with Christmas is one that’s often overlooked when people name their favorite “Christmas films,” The Shop Around the Corner. The entertaining comedy/drama/romance was directed by Ernst Lubitsch and stars Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, and Frank Morgan. In 1949, the story was retold in the wonderful In the Good Old Summertime with Judy Garland, Van Johnson, Buster Keaton, S.Z. Sakall, and Spring Byington.

Same story, simply retold with different actors and actresses. Both films are outstanding but, personally, I prefer the 1949 version just a little better… which is odd, given that I’m the world’s biggest James Stewart fan!

Having said that, The Shop Around the Corner is perfectly wonderful in every way. In fact, whenever there’s a poll asking which of the two people like best, The Shop Around the Corner always wins. What can I say, you can’t go wrong with either. Especially not when you have casts like these two films have!

You can buy The Shop Around the Corner on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

James Stewart and Kim Novak Behind the Scenes of Vertigo

James Stewart and Kim Novak Behind the Scenes of VertigoJames Stewart and Kim Novak Behind the Scenes

I love  the shot above of James Stewart and Kim Novak on the set of Vertigo (1958). Something I’m always amazed about with Kim Novak is how much younger (and even prettier) she was without extra makeup, glamour and glitz. She was strikingly beautiful and always looked even younger when she was out of character.

She and James Stewart worked flawlessly together in this film – in roles that weren’t even remotely simple. I honestly don’t feel that either (particularly Kim Novak) gets enough credit for what they did in this wonderful Hitchcock film.

You  can fin Vertigo (Amazon link) on dvd, I’m really surprised it isn’t on Prime Video yet.

Jimmy Stewart and His Poems: A MUST HAVE for James Stewart Fans!

September 4, 2021 By Joi

Jimmy Stewart and His PoemsJimmy Stewart and His Poems

If you’re even remotely familiar with me, you know all about my HUGE obsession with old Hollywood books (biographies, memoirs, cookbooks, autobiographies, poems..). I spend some of my happiest moments curled up with one of these prized possessions.

The one pictured here is one of my favorites. Not just because it was written by one of my absolute favorite actors but also because the poetry is breathtakingly wonderful.

From Amazon:

“I’m sure I never said to myself: ‘Now, Jim–why don’t you sit down and write a poem.’ It’s still a mystery to me, but I think probably it’s something that happened by accident–like a lot of things have happened in my life.”

So begins this delightful collection of poetry by America’s best-loved actor, Jimmy Stewart. Interspersed with vivid recollections and charming illustrations, the poems document a life that isn’t too different from yours or mine.

Jimmy Stewart won the hearts of generations of movie viewers with a confused innocence and stammering delivery that made his acting seem genuine and effortless. Somehow he managed to make the boy next door into a national hero. Now, in Jimmy Stewart and His Poems, the consummate Everyman shares tales from his everyday life.

From fishing trips and dog stories to a hilarious account of a photo safari where the camera was lost to a hungry hyena, the poems are related in Jimmy Stewart’s inimitable voice and are enlivened with charming illustrations.

The book confirms what we all expected–that the real Jimmy Stewart is every bit as endearing as the film characters he’s portrayed. Jimmy Stewart and His Poems is a perfect gift, one that fans will treasure as much as Jimmy Stewart’s timeless performances.

I love to read and reread his wonderful poetry – it’s an insight into just how special this legend truly was.

You can find Jimmy Stewart and His Poems on Amazon. It’d make a great gift idea for any James Stewart fan in your life… just be sure to grab a copy for yourself!

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan

My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??
