Old Hollywood: Movies, Actresses, and Actors

The Wonderful Paul Henreid was BOTD in 1908

January 10, 2023 By Joi

Paul Henreid and Humphrey Bogart, Casablanca

Paul Henreid and Humphrey Bogart, Casablanca

One of the best actors from Old Hollywood… or any Hollywood for that matter… was BOTD in 1908, Paul Henreid.  His filmography is FILLED with timeless entertainment and masterful performances. A few of my personal favorite Henried films are The Spanish Main, Casablanca, Between Two Worlds, and Now, Voyager.

I was recently discussing my top 10 favorite actors with someone and, as I mentioned Paul Henreid’s name between James Cagney and John Wayne, it hit me just how unique he was. I’ll get back to this in one moment, but to further illustrate my point, here are my top 10 favorite male actors:

  1. Henry Fonda
  2. James Stewart
  3. Buster Keaton
  4. Lionel Barrymore
  5. James Cagney
  6. Paul Henreid
  7. John Wayne
  8. Humphrey Bogart
  9. James Garner
  10. Jack Lemmon

When you read the names, you’ll notice that many had a lot of larger than life characters and carved out a larger than life persona for themselves. John Wayne, Buster Keaton, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, James Stewart, Jack Lemmon…. known for their great talent and excellent characters they brought to life.

Yet, the same can ABSOLUTELY be said of Henry Fonda, Lionel Barrymore, Paul Henreid, and James Garner. Their characters were often more traditionally calm.. oftentimes more “real.” If you ask me (and no one did, but, if I know me, I’ll probably proceed anyway), their characters would have been even more challenging to portray.

The wonderful thing is, Hollywood needed (and needs) both types of actors and actresses – all of either type of actor/actress wouldn’t be nearly as enjoyable.

So, next time you watch a classic like Casablanca, Gone With the Wind (with the contrast of Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland), or any great classic for that matter, pay a little extra attention to both types of actors/actresses. I recently did this with a rewatch of Between two Worlds – again, contrasting the calm demeanor and flawless execution of Paul Henreid and the impassioned demeanor and (again) flawless execution of John Garfield. They had a similar dynamic to Henreid and Bogart in Casablanca and it simply works so beautifully.

Happy Heavenly birthday to the wonderful Paul Henried. Thanks for all of the excellent performances and films!

Hazel Brooks, Body and Soul

Hazel Brooks, Body and SoulHazel Brooks

Beautiful Hazel Brooks is one of those lovely old Hollywood stars who (for inexplicable reasons) never quite found stardom. She didn’t make very many films, unfortunately.. I would have loved to see her in more! Then again, there is something to be said for the old adage, “Always leave them wanting more.”

Hazel is best known for her role in the wonderful film-noir Body and Soul (1947, directed by Robert Rossen). The movie also stars John Garfield, Lilli Palmer, and William Conrad.

Is that a great cast or what??!

Did You Know?

Hazel Brooks was married to the wonderful Art Director Cedric Gibbons from 1944 to his death in 1960. A FEW of the many wonderful films he worked on: Gaslight, High Society, The Wizard of Oz, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers & The Long, Long Trailer.

The talented Gibbons also designed the Academy Award statuette Oscar!

Between Two Worlds: Deliciously Unique, Edge of Your Seat Movie

Between Two Worlds Lobby Card

I’ve already written about Between Two Worlds (1944) once or twice on the old Hollywood blog… but it’s so outstanding I’m here to do it all over again! To save myself from repeating myself too many times (something I am wont to do!), I’ll link to the most recent review I did of this extraordinary movie: Between Two Worlds Reminds Us Why We Fell In Love With Movies in the First Place.

The movie’s excellent cast includes John Garfield, Paul Henreid, Eleanor Parker, Sydney Greenstreet, Faye Emerson, Edmund Gwenn, Sara Allgood, George Tobias, Dennis King, and George Coulouris. Each one gives a flawless performance… absolutely flawless.

Between Two Worlds (Amazon link) is on dvd and will every now and then show up on TCM. It isn’t on Prime Video, yet, but I hope it will be one day soon.

Ida Lupino, John Garfield, and Edward G. Robinson in The Sea Wolf

John Garfield, Ida Lupino, and Edward G. Robinson in The Sea Wolf

John Garfield, Ida Lupino, and Edward G. Robinson

Talk about a powerful cast! The Sea Wolf (1941) had three of Hollywood’s greatest talents leading the way – director Michael Curtiz must’ve felt like one lucky man.

As if these three weren’t enough (they were), the cast also boasted Barry Fitzgerald – one of the best character actors of all time. Powerful cast… powerful film.

You can find The Sea Wolf on dvd on Amazon or watch on Prime.

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

Maureen O’Hara

The Old Hollywood & Classic TV Pictures of the Day are published as regularly as possible. If I miss a few days, please just know that the husband, daughters, sons-in-law, grandbabies, and/or my cats were demanding my attention. I’ll be honest, nothing comes before any of them! Not even Maureen O’Hara or Henry Fonda.

Priorities, y’all.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!
