Sammy Davis Jr, Porgy and Bess (1959, directed by Otto Preminger)
One of the undisputed all-time great entertainers, Sammy Davis Jr was BOTD in 1935. My mom was one of his biggest fans, so (thankfully) his music, tv shows, guest appearances, and films were enjoyed OFTEN in our home.
He, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin were three of the stars who first drew me both to old Hollywood AND music in the first place.
Sammy Davis Jr was as charismatic, multitalented, and fascinating as any star we’ve ever had. He had a certain magic to him that never fails to kind of take me off guard. Like the talent of James Stewart, Henry Fonda, and James Cagney and the beauty of Maureen O’Hara, Ava Gardner, and Lena Horne… his charisma and appeal seem almost impossible when you watch him.
Be happy, be blessed!
