It's a Wonderful Life Lobby Card

It’s a Wonderful Life Lobby Card

Another day, another It’s a Wonderful Life post. What can I say, this movie is an absolute obsession with me and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Before next Christmas, I would LOVE to have the beginnings of an It’s a Wonderful Life lobby card and movie poster collection.

I’m not going to lie… I would leave them hanging all year. After all, you can never have too much Christmas magic in your life and this movie is JUST that.

You can buy It’s a Wonderful Life on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

Lionel Barrymore, Frank Hagney, and James Stewart It's a Wonderful Life

Lionel Barrymore, Frank Hagney, and James Stewart

We all have those certain “top tier” favorite movies that just mean the world to us – movies that made us fall in love with classic films in the first place. It’s a Wonderful Life is absolutely one of mine… in fact, it sits FIRMLY tied with two others for my very top spot.

James Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, AND Donna Reed? How could I not be completely infatuated with it, they’re three of my “ride or die” favorites!

You can buy It’s a Wonderful Life on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the MAGIC on Prime Video.

Lionel Barrymore, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, and Jean Hersholt Behind the Scenes of Grand Hotel (1932)

Joan Crawford, Lionel Barrymore, and John Barrymore on the Set of Grand Hotel

Lionel Barrymore, John Barrymore, Joan Crawford, and Jean Hersholt Behind the Scenes

Edmund Goulding was given a cast most directors only dream of with the iconic 1932 drama Grand Hotel… Greta Garbo, Lewis Stone, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery,  Lionel Barrymore and John Barrymore.

While Greta Garbo is considered by many to be the star of the film, as far as I’m concerned the stars of the movie are Joan Crawford,  Lionel Barrymore, John Barrymore and Lewis Stone. They simply stand out and, IMO, make the movie what it is.

Grand Hotel (1932) is both a must see and must have for any serious movie lovers and collectors.

You can find Grand Hotel on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

Key Largo Lobby Card

I absolutely LOVE this Key Largo (1948) lobby card… the colors are spellbinding. Directed by the wonderful John Huston with a cast including Humphrey Bogart, Lionel Barrymore, Lauren Bacall, Edward G. Robinson, and Claire Trevor, this is one extraordinary movie.

You can find Key Largo on dvd or blu-ray (Amazon link) or watch the classic and iconic film noir on Prime Video.

Elizabeth Allan and Lionel Barrymore, Mark of the Vampire

Elizabeth Allan and Lionel Barrymore in Mark of the Vampire

Elizabeth Allan and Lionel Barrymore

If there’s one thing you can be certain of, if Ethel or Lionel Barrymore is in a movie, I will watch it and watch it and watch it again and again. I feel they were in a league of their own making and can’t get enough of either of them. Naturally, this time of  year, I revisit one of my favorite classic “horror” films, Mark of the Vampire.

Lionel Barrymore is, as always, perfectly wonderful in this film and draws you in to each and every scene he’s in…. creepy surroundings or not, you have to go where he leads you.

If you’ve never seen this particular film, I hope you’ll check it out really soon. It is incredibly unique and it’s one of those films you find yourself thinking (and talking) about for days upon end!

You can watch Mark of the Vampire on Prime Video (Amazon link).

Joan Crawford, John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore, and Lewis Stone in Grand Hotel

Joan Crawford, John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore, and Lewis Stone

Grand Hotel (1932, directed by Edmund Goulding) is known for being an extraordinary film and known for having an unbelievably strong cast. Greta Garbo, Lewis Stone, Joan Crawford, Wallace Beery, and not one but TWO Barrymores… Lionel and John.

My favorite scenes in the film are those with either Joan Crawford or Lionel Barrymore or… even better… both of them. I also love the performances of John Barrymore and Lewis Stone.

It’s a very good movie and a must see and must have for any serious movie collector.

You can find Grand Hotel on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

Lionel Barrymore, Lauren Bacall, and Humphrey Bogart: Behind the Scenes of Key Largo

Lionel Barrymore, Lauren Bacall, and Humphrey Bogart

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a billion times… Key Largo is one of the greatest movies ever made. The cast is perfection and the story & directing (by John Huston) are phenomenal. Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Lionel Barrymore, Claire Trevor, Edward G. Robinson each star gives one of the best performances of his or her career.

You can find all of the excellence on dvd (Amazon link) or watch Key Largo on Prime Video.

One of my favorite movies of all-time is also one of the ones that launched my extreme love and passion for old movies – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946).

WHAT A CAST! Undoubtedly one of the greatest casts ever assembled – and boy did it ever pay off. They made a movie that is an absolute legend and one that has touched (and continues to touch) countless hearts each year.

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

Read more about Hollywood Yesterday (and see my personal favorites) here!

Old Hollywood Book Reviews

Ann Dvorak: Hollywood's Forgotten Rebel by Christina Rice

I love reading old Hollywood biographies and memoirs as much as I love watching classic movies, and that’s truly saying something!

Pictures of the Day

Maureen O'Hara, The Parent Trap

Maureen O’Hara

The Old Hollywood & Classic TV Pictures of the Day are published as regularly as possible. If I miss a few days, please just know that the husband, daughters, sons-in-law, grandbabies, and/or my cats were demanding my attention. I’ll be honest, nothing comes before any of them! Not even Maureen O’Hara or Henry Fonda.

Priorities, y’all.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!

Old Hollywood Movies

Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire Top Hat Cheek to Cheek

There’s nothing quite like watching a movie from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Whether it’s a Musical, Western, Comedy, Romance, Film Noir, or Drama – if it’s on, I’m not too far away… with popcorn and raspberry tea in hand and a couple of cats nearby.

Below are a few Old Hollywood movie reviews I’ve done on the blog. There are, as you’d imagine, a lot more to come. – Joi (“Joy”)
