Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, and William Wyler, Behind the Scenes of Roman Holiday

Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, and William Wyler, Behind the Scenes of Roman Holiday

Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, and William Wyler

One of my all-time favorite movies is the wonderful, wonderful, WONDERFUL Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck (two stars who were mesmerizingly beautiful together). Directed by the best man for the job, William Wyler, the film is a classic and lives up to the name.

If I could change one thing about the movie, it would be the ending… it was perfectly fine, mind you (and Peck’s smile made it even more so), but it wasn’t quite what I had hoped for. I still LOVE the movie to distraction, mind you.

You can find Roman Holiday on dvd (Amazon link) or watch its magic on Prime Video.

James Cagney and Edward Woods in The Public Enemy (1931)

James Cagney and Edward Woods The Public Enemy
James Cagney and Edward Woods The Public Enemy

I rewatched The Public Enemy last week (possibly for the hundredth time) and was,  yet again, struck by the jaw-dropping talent of James Cagney and Edward Woods (an actor who doesn’t get nearly enough attention). I was also reminded of the magic that was Jean Harlow.

The Harlow Magic can’t possibly be described – it has to be experienced… it has to be felt. You can see photos of the actress and, while they’re obviously lovely, they truly don’t do her justice. when she spoke, when she moved, and when she conveyed emotions with her beautiful eyes, the spell is cast and the magic explodes.

The only knock I have against The Public Enemy is the fact that she wasn’t in more scenes. Then again, her few short appearances may actually make a larger impact – a rare phenomenon is often felt even more.

The Public Enemy is an extraordinary movie. Is it a “feel good” film… Heavens no, but it is one everyone should see at least once. When you do, you’re probably going to end up seeing it countless times like me.

There’s just something about these characters that beg you to revisit them.

You can find The Public Enemy on dvd or Blu-ray (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

Maureen O’Hara and Tyrone Power, The Black Swan (Love this One!)

Maureen O'Hara and Tyrone Power, The Black Swan

Maureen O’Hara and Tyrone Power, The Black Swan

I love swashbucklers almost as much as I love Westerns. In fact, they’ve always kind of reminded me of Westerns on the sea. The heroes simply ride boats instead of horses and carry swords instead of guns!

The Black Swan (1942, directed by Henry King) is one of my favorite Swashbuckler movies. TYrone Power and Maureen O’Hara have a natural, wonderful chemistry that was so obvious neither had to attempt to force it.

The colorful movie also stars George Sanders, Anthony Quinn, Laird Cregar, Thomas Mitchell, and George Zucco.

You can find The Black Swan on dvd (Amazon link) or watch it on Prime Video.

Joseph Cotten, Loretta Young, Ethel Barrymore, and Charles Bickford: The Farmer’s Daughter

Joseph Cotten and Loretta Young in The Farmer's Daughter

Joseph Cotten and Loretta Young

When I first sat down to watch The Farmer’s Daughter, I was a little afraid that a blonde Loretta Young, faking a Swedish accent would be a great distraction. Although I love her to distraction, I honestly wondered, “Why didn’t they simply get a blonde Swedish actress WITH an accent already built in?!”

Inside of 10 minutes, I knew why… there’s simply no role Loretta Young could not play. In no time, I was completely buying everything she was selling. She managed the accent perfectly, never over or under doing it and she wore the blonde hair exquisitely.

The VERY entertaining film was directed by H.C. Potter and stars Loretta Young, Ethel Barrymore, Joseph Cotten, and the always wonderful Charles Bickford. It’s a wonderful story, brought to life by an outstanding cast. The entire cast had a magic-like rapport and the chemistry between Joseph Cotten & Loretta Young AND Ethel Barrymore & Charles Bickford is palpable.

The casting department struck gold with this cast.

You can find the wonderful The Farmer’s Daughter on dvd (Amazon link)… and if you love great movies, with wonderful storytelling and extraordinary casts, you should do just that!

John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, Beautiful Promotional Photo for The Quiet Man

April 20, 2022 By Joi

John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, The Quiet Man Promotional Picture

John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, The Quiet Man

While I love absolutely every movie John Wayne made, every movie Maureen O’Hara made, and most movies directed by John Ford (didn’t care for Mogambo), when the three teamed up, magic happened.

In addition to directing Maureen O’Hara in How Green was my Valley and John Wayne in MANY movies, John Ford directed the legendary cinematic pair in Rio Grande and The Quiet Man. While both movies are spectacular, The Quiet Man is absolutely magical – one of the best movies ever made… possibly THE best in my opinion.

The Quiet Man stars John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Barry Fitzgerald, Ward Bond, Victor McLaglen, Mildred Natwick, and Maureen O’Hara’s own brothers James O’Hara and Charles B. Fitzsimons. It also stars one of the most beautiful scene-stealers I’ve ever seen, Ireland.

If you haven’t seen this uncommonly stunning movie yet, I hope you won’t let another day pass before you treat yourself to it’s beauty, magic, and perfection.

You can find The Quiet Man (Collector’s DVD on Amazon) on dvd or watch on Prime Video.

John Wayne, Stagecoach Promotional Picture

John Wayne, Stagecoach

John Wayne, Stagecoach

As far as I’m concerned, one of the best Westerns ever made was Stagecoach (1939). The cast includes John Wayne, Claire Trevor, Andy Devine, John Carradine, Thomas Mitchell, George Bancroft, Louise Platt, Donald Meek, Berton Churchill.

The outstanding cast was directed by the wonderful John Ford and is absolutely a perfect film.

You can find Stagecoach on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video. I simply CANNOT recommend this one enough – the “entry scene” for John Wayne is one of the best character introductions in the history of film.

Arsenic and Old Lace… You Really, Really, Really Have to See this Comedy!

April 5, 2022 By Joi

Jean Adair, Josephine Hull, and Cary Grant in Arsenic and Old Lace

Jean Adair, Josephine Hull, and Cary Grant

Arsenic and Old Lace is, unquestionably, one of the funniest and most enjoyable movies ever made. It’s one of those you hear mentioned so often that you kind of glaze over the recommendations. It almost becomes, “Well, of course you say I should see it… everyone says that.”

But here’s the thing, everyone says it for a darn good reason… you should see it! You know what’ll happen when you do see it, don’t you? You’ll become one of us annoying people who keep telling everyone else to watch it!

Trust me, it’s well worth the risk. The movie is front to back pure entertainment and a great joy to watch.

PLOT: Cary Grant is Mortimer, a successful author of books on the futility of marriage. He risks his career and reputation as an expert when he decides to marry the beautiful Elaine (Priscilla Lane). Things go from bad to worse when he learns (on his wedding day no less!) that his beloved aunts (Josephine Hull and Jean Adair) murder men in their own home! The great thing is, they believe they’re doing a good thing and they are so adorable and hilarious you kind of lean toward their side.

The cast includes Cary Grant, Priscilla Lane, Josephine Hull, Jean Adair, Raymond Massey, Edward Everett Horton, Peter Lorre, Jack Carson, and James Alexander (in the hilarious role of Teddy Roosevelt… well, he thinks he is!)

The Perfect Movie, The Perfect Cast: The Farmer’s Daughter (1947)

Joseph Cotten, Loretta Young, Ethel Barrymore, and Charles Bickford in The Farmer's Daughter

Joseph Cotten, Loretta Young, Charles Bickford, and Ethel Barrymore

The Farmer’s Daughter (1947) is one of the most thoroughly enjoyable movies ever made. This may seem like a huge statement to some people, but to those who have seen this extraordinary film, it will seem more like an understatement.

It’s a breathtakingly lovely romantic comedy with a cast that’ll blow you away.  Directed by H.C. Potter, everything about The Farmer’s Daughter is perfect. Loretta Young, Joseph Cotten, Ethel Barrymore, and Charles Bickford bring a wonderful script to life and make movie magic in doing so.

Ingrid Bergman: Beautiful Publicity Photos for Casablanca

March 2, 2022 By Joi

Ingrid Bergman, Casablanca

Ingrid Bergman

1942’s Casablanca (directed by Michael Curtiz) is both one of the most-loved and one of the absolute best films ever made. The cast is extraordinary, the directing flawless, and the story compelling. I’d easily say it’s the “perfect movie” in every way possible.

The film stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henried, Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, S.Z. Sakall, Conrad Veidt, Peter Lorre, and Dooley Wilson.

The cast dreams are made of!

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Maureen O'Hara, Makeup Picture

Maureen O’Hara
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

The Old Hollywood & Classic TV Pictures of the Day are published as regularly as possible. If I miss a few days, please just know that the husband, daughters, sons-in-law, grandbabies, and/or my cats were demanding my attention. I’ll be honest, nothing comes before any of them! Not even Maureen O’Hara or Henry Fonda.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!
