Positivity, Fertilizer, Dolphins, and Katharine Hepburn… and it’s Just Monday!

May 1, 2023 By Joi

Rita Hayworth, Gilda

Rita Hayworth

As I mention on the About Page for Hollywood Yesterday, I am stunningly careful and respectful when writing about these wonderful stars from Old Hollywood. Heck, I even use extra care when simply posting their pictures, whether it’s on my blog or Twitter Page.

I’m diligent about keeping these beautiful stars shining brightly and I want them to shine on at their very best. Whether it’s a post I publish on this blog or tweets I send on Twitter, I often remind myself of a heart-tugging quote Rita Hayworth once told someone, “Whatever you write about me, don’t make it sad.”

I have no idea of doing anything remotely like that, Rita. You’re safe with me.

Yesterday I started to tweet a photo of Rita (seems I’m extra protective of her!) and I looked closely at it first… it occurred to me that it wouldn’t be one she’d want to be remembered by. Trust me, it didn’t take long to find a better one. I had a couple zillion to choose from.

These beautiful, wonderful, amazing, extraordinary stars were human, just like the rest of us. Even Rita was presumably human. Whether they’re still with us or have passed on, they want to be remembered at their best.

It honestly breaks my heart when I see someone bringing up the worst moments in someone’s life after they’ve passed.  I always want to ask them, “Do you want to be remembered, after you’re gone, for your worst moments or your best?” Seriously, some seem to carry a personal vendetta against select stars for what they once said, who they once divorced, what they once did, how they voted (seriously?!?) etc.

Why? Well, it’s beyond me. If, say social justice warriors Jane Doe or her brother John Doe want to make the world a better place, I commend them. How about volunteering at a homeless shelter or home for battered women and/or children, taking up and supporting a cause to help those who are hurting or hungry, jump on board a program that’s making the world safer and happier place for Veterans, children, animals, dolphins, the elderly, diabetics, people with Down’s Syndrome, Autism, etc. The Does could take that passion and drive (both of which are admirable traits) and direct them where they truly make a difference.

So many people would WIN then… life is so much sweeter when you focus your energy on making wins for lots of people as opposed to a loss for one. Especially when that one has already passed on!

Frankly, wagging one’s tongue relentlessly about an actor or actress who is no longer even alive isn’t doing anyone any good. Negativity and toxicity almost always most hurts the one who is spreading it around. Kind of like when I spread fertilizer on my flowers, herbs, or vegetables… it gets on me, it doesn’t get on anyone else. To keep drawing from a pool of toxicity, hate, and slandering would be like me deciding I very much wanted to just spread the fertilizer out on the ground and wallow in it.

Not a great look. My cats would have me committed.

I have noticed something on social media lately – I’d say over the course of the past year. The more toxic and negative people in the old Hollywood community are fading away. They’re discovering that people may be mildly amused by constant anger and by someone belittling and making fun of people for a while but, ultimately, they tire of all the drama and feel smothered by the toxicity. With no one else to rant to, they simply disappear. Now, don’t get me wrong, I actually hate it. I’d much rather they had, mid-rant about this actor or that one, realized that they were helping no one. Personally, I believe they think they’re making themselves look good. If one has to dig up a bad quote or mistake from someone no longer even living to make themselves look good, it’s kind of sad… downright bordering on pathetic.

Another pet peeve is when someone (again on social media) responds to a positive message with vile for the individual. When I first jumped on the social media bandwagon, some people had me reluctant to even post about a couple of people because they always had venom to spew. One day.. I remember it well because I literally had a mental and physical pivot lol… I sat down to Tweet something about Katharine Hepburn. I stood back up thinking, “Oh, no.. there’ll be about 3 different people who’ll say negative things about her relationship with Spencer Tracy and a few others who’ll make fun of her… I don’t have the mental bandwidth for them today…” But, as I stood up, the more spirited side of my persona told the mild side, “Heck them!” and we all sat back down.

Since then, when someone says something negative about someone (Katharine, Spencer, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean are some of people’s favorite targets), I literally tweet three more things about the person.

Petty? Probably. But it amuses the spirited side greatly.

(Continued below the wonderful Katharine Hepburn…)

Katharine Hepburn, Stage Door

Katharine Hepburn

I am just so very, very thankful that the vast majority of people in the Old Hollywood community are just as respectful of the stars as I am. I can tell by the graciousness of their words and even by the photos they share. It makes me so happy that there are so many people who want to keep these stars alive and well – whether it’s the ones who are already household names…

  • Marilyn Monroe
  • Rita Hayworth
  • John Wayne
  • Ava Gardner
  • Henry Fonda
  • Maureen O’Hara
  • James Stewart
  • Joan Crawford
  • Sidney Poitier
  • Bette Davis
  • Katharine Hepburn
  • Audrey Hepburn
  • Veronica Lake
  • Lionel Barrymore
  • Lena Horne

… or those we are trying very hard to MAKE household names…

  • Ann Sheridan
  • Ethel Barrymore
  • Margaret Lindsay
  • Paul Henreid
  • Victor McLaglen
  • Beulah Bondi
  • Paul Robeson
  • Thomas Mitchell
  • Dorothy Dandridge
  • Rhonda Fleming
  • Ann Dvorak
  • etc…

I love that so many people are doing their part to keep Old Hollywood alive and exciting. I wish I could personally thank every single person who is involved.

At any rate, there you have it – the ins and outs of why I am relentlessly positive, why I don’t respond to negativity, and why I don’t shine spotlights on flaws or use myself as an echo for ugly quotes. Just because someone doesn’t want to talk about, read about, or point out mistakes others have made doesn’t mean they approve of any of them – it simply means they’re busy living their own life and have their hands full with this whole being a human thing to cast a single stone.

Thank you so much for being here, you honor me with your presence,

~ Joi (“Joy”)

Lena Horne, Cabin in the Sky

Lena Horne, Cabin in the Sky

The beautiful Lena Horne photos shown here were promotional pictures for her wonderful 1943 musical Cabin in the Sky. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, the musical’s cast also includes Eddie Anderson, Ethel Waters, Rex Ingram, Louis Armstrong, Bill Bailey, Mantan Moreland, and Oscar Polk.

If you’ve never seen it, I hope you’ll find it soon and fall in love with it. If you HAVE seen it… well… watch it again and fall in love with it all over again. I honestly find something fresh and new each time I revisit it. With a cast this amazing, you’ll discover new expressions each time you spend time with them.

You can buy Cabin in the Sky on dvd (Amazon link) on watch it on Prime Video.

Beautiful, Talented, and in ALL Ways Extraordinary… Dorothy Malone!

March 30, 2023 By Joi

Dorothy Malone, Written on the Wind

Dorothy Malone

Dorothy Malone was one extraordinarily talented and beautiful actress and one who deserves to be a household name. She stood out in every film she ever made – including the ones in which she was literally surrounded by household names!

The gorgeous photo above is a publicity photo for Written on the Wind (1956). Directed by Douglas Sirk, the movie also stars Rock Hudson, Lauren Bacall, and Robert Stack. It’s wonderfully entertaining and, IMO anyway, Dorothy Malone steals the entire film.

You can find Written on the Wind on DVD (Amazon link) or (in some locations, apparently!) watch the movie on Prime Video.

It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street Coffee Mugs (Plus a Bonus One that Sums it ALL UP!)

December 10, 2022 By Joi

As quite possibly the world’s biggest It’s a Wonderful Life fan, I have zero idea how I don’t already have this gorgeous It’s a Wonderful Life Coffee Mug (Amazon link) in my coffee mug collection.

What a travesty of justice and sensibility!

I am, however, on the cusp of righting this wrong even as we speak.

Right after I saw the great It’s a Wonderful Life mug, I spied another one that makes me feel so very, very, VERY seen. The I Just Want to Drink Coffee and Watch Christmas Movies mug (Amazon link) pictured below.

I mean, does this one sum it all up or what?!

But, wait… I’m not through (neither is my Amazon shopping cart, unfortunately), when you click through and visit the It’s a Wonderful Life mug’s page (link above), you’ll also find they have another CLASSIC and ICONIC Christmas movie (and another of my personal favorites), Miracle on 34th Street. I don’t have a picture to share with you, but it features the movie poster pictured below. It’s gorgeous and I have every intention of drinking from it and the It’s a Wonderful Life mugs all year long for years to come!

Raquel Welch

Raquel Welch

Raquel Welch was born Jo Raquel Tejada on September 5, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. Before becoming an actress, Raquel worked as a TV weather person, as a model for Neiman-Marcus, and as a barmaid.

Early work in Hollywood included an episode of Bewitched (she portrayed a stewardess), McHale’s Navy, and The Virginian. Her breakout film was One Million Years B.C. in 1966, a movie that’s loved and watched again and again by its many devotees.

Other films include Bandolero!, Myra Breckinridge, 100 Rifles, Kansas City Bomber, The Three Musketeers, The Four Musketeers: Milady’s Revenge, and Mother, Jugs, and Speed.

John Wayne, Anna Lee, and John Carroll in Flying Tigers (1942)

John Wayne and Anna Lee in Flying Tigers

John Wayne and Anna Lee

Flying Tigers is a really, really good 1942 drama starring John Wayne, Anna Lee, and John Carroll. Directed by David Miller, it’s a film that doesn’t get as much attention as many of the Duke’s films but it is wonderful in every way.

John Wayne, Anna Lee, and John Carroll in Flying Tigers

John Wayne, Anna Lee, and John Carroll

Each time I see this film I’m reminded of how much I adore John Wayne in AND out of westerns. While he fits westerns so perfectly I’m convinced he was born to be a cowboy, he was also wonderful in other films and other roles. Every now and then it’s refreshing to see him out of a cowboy hat… even if I keep half-expecting a horse to be around each corner!

I’m also reminded, with each viewing, how very lovely and talented Anna Lee was. Known most for How Green Was My Valley and General Hospital, she had a strong presence in every film she appeared in and made each scene better simply by showing up. I’m always amazed at how someone who looked so lovely and delicate could have had such a presence!

You can find Flying Tigers on dvd (Amazon link). Several versions are available but I’m linking to the dvd that has Anna Lee on the cover along with John Wayne. Yes… I do look for such things. You can also watch the movie on Prime Video. I am pleasantly surprised it’s available on Prime!

GORGEOUS Marilyn Monroe 3-Piece Wall Canvas

February 1, 2022 By Joi

I love to surround myself with things that make me smile (maybe that’s why we have 5 cats?!?), so you’ll find a lot of colorful, whimsical decorations and artwork in our home. A great deal of it is related to old Hollywood, as you’d expect.

In the den, alone, are framed photos of Marilyn, Claire Trevor, John Wayne, James Dean, and Audrey Hepburn!

I have my eye on this gorgeous Marilyn Monroe 3-Piece Canvas (Amazon link) as well. I mean… just look at it. GORGEOUS.

I love that it’s in black in white, except for her lips. It makes the entire photo really pop – plus it’s a stunning image of Marilyn… I just love everything about it.

The three piece set is framed and ready to hang, meaning your room of choice can get the makeover it deserves the minute you welcome Marilyn to your home!

Bela, Boris, and Basil in Son of Frankenstein (1939)… Talk about a 1, 2, 3 Punch!

October 30, 2021 By Joi

Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, and Bela Lugosi

Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, and Bela Lugosi

Some films boast casts and some films boast ICONIC casts. Son of Frankenstein (1939) is the latter. Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, and Bela Lugosi.. in ONE film?! That’s what I call a film for the ages.

The classic horror was directed by the wonderful Rowland V. Lee and I call him wonderful not just because he was an outstanding (and way ahead of his time) director but also because (as a huge Bela Lugosi fan) I love the extent he went to in order to give Lugosi more respect, credit, and even money while making this film.

Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Basil Rathbonev

Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Basil Rathbone

Sadly, Bela Lugosi’s career was beginning to decline when he signed on to make Son of Frankenstein and his fee reflected this decline. Fortunately, director Rowland V. Lee was VERY much in his corner. He realized that Lugosi wasn’t being treated fairly and was perhaps even being taken for granted, so he gave Bela’s character (Ygor) more dialogue and a bigger role in the film, causing Bela be paid (and respected) more.

This role, IMO, is one of Lugosi’s absolute best performances. He more than rewarded Lee’s wonderful efforts!

You can watch Son of Frankenstein on Prime Video (Amazon link). I’m having a heckuva time finding it on dvd for my collection, but if I’m ever to find it, I’ll let you know.

Claudette Colbert, Publicity Photos for The Sign of the Cross (1932)

September 22, 2021 By Joi

Claudette Colbert, The Sign of the Cross

Claudette Colbert

When an actor or actress “fits” a role so perfectly it seems to have been designed for them and ONLY them, movie MAGIC happens. Such is the case with Claudette Colbert and Empress Poppaea in The Sign of the Cross (1932, directed by the legend, himself, Cecil B. DeMille). Then again, this can be said of quite a few of Claudette Colbert roles can’t it?

Seems a great deal of the MAGIC was with the actress more than the roles. Why doesn’t this surprise me??!

The Little Rascals: The Complete Collection (Beautiful Boxed Set)

The Little Rascals Complete Collection on DVD
The Little Rascals: The Complete Collection

What exactly is it about The Little Rascals that makes these episodes so enjoyable?!? The children are so adorable and their situations so funny, I could (and often do) watch them every day of the week.

One of the smartest purchases I’ve ever made is shown here – the complete collection of The Little Rascals. Not only is it highly convenient to have the entertaining series available any time I want to kick back with the “gang,” the collection came with an great little booklet with fun facts and pictures (pictured below).

The Little Rascals Complete Collection on DVD

Fun Booklet of Facts and Photos

The entire collection is packaged beautifully, too. I love the way it looks sitting on my dvd shelves. All television and movie collections should be as great looking as this one. I’ve become a huge fan of boxed collections, whether they’re a particular star’s movies, a television series, or film franchise. I do buy some tv seasons separately, but a collection simply looks neater on shelves – plus it’s easier to find what you’re looking for!

Trust me, I’d know. Sometimes it takes me over 10 minutes to find a particular movie or episode I’m in the mood for. Frankly, that’s precious time that could be spent waiting hand and foot on my cats or popping popcorn for movie night!

The Little Rascals Complete Collection on DVD

I’d highly recommend this collection for any fan of The Little Rascals. I’d also suggest it as a great gift idea for anyone in your life who loves classic movies and television. This is the type of gift that would be enjoyed for years and years and years.

And then some!

See The Little Rascals: The Complete Collection (Link to the Collection on Amazon) for more information. There’s a lot of joy to be had in this collection.

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

Read more about Hollywood Yesterday (and see my personal favorites) here!

Ann Dvorak: Hollywood's Forgotten Rebel by Christina Rice

I love reading old Hollywood biographies and memoirs as much as I love watching classic movies, and that’s truly saying something!

The Old Hollywood & Classic TV Pictures of the Day are published as regularly as possible. If I miss a few days, please just know that the husband, daughters, sons-in-law, grandbabies, and/or my cats were demanding my attention. I’ll be honest, nothing comes before any of them! Not even Maureen O’Hara or Henry Fonda.

Priorities, y’all.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!
