Perfect Cast, Perfect Script, Perfect Director, Perfect Movie… The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)

January 23, 2023 By Joi

The Adventures of Robin Hood Cast

Melville Cooper, Basil Rathbone, Olivia de Havilland, Claude Rains, and Errol Flynn

Can we talk about one of the best movies ever made for a minute? The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) wasn’t just directed by one of the best directors to ever wear the title – the wonderful Micahel Curtiz – it also features the type of stellar cast that most films would envy – a cast that includes Olivia de Havilland, Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Patric Knowles, Eugene Pallette, Alan Hale, Una O’Connor, Melville Cooper, and Ian Hunter.

(Continued Below…)

Errol Flynn and Eugene Pallette in The Adventures of Robin Hood

Errol Flynn and Eugene Pallette

This is one of those films that, somehow, seems to be even more enjoyable each time you watch it. I always notice a new expression on one of the star’s faces or a great line that had never quite registered, a piece of background furniture or something delicious that had escaped me the MANY times I’d visited the film before.

In fact, if I’m not mistaken… and in this case I am absolutely not mistaken… I’ll be revisiting this extraordinary film again this week.

You can buy the iconic The Adventures of Robin Hood on dvd (Amazon link) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn Make Their Own Kind of Magic in Silver River (1948)

September 8, 2022 By Joi

Silver River with Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn

There are many film couples who made movie magic:

  • Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne
  • Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck
  • Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall
  • Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire
  • Ruby Dee and Sidney Poitier
  • Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland
  • etc etc etc…

But one of the couples I’d put on my list of favorites (right up there with the all-time greats) is one others may overlook…. Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn. They didn’t make NEARLY enough movies together, but I absolutely cherish the few they did make –  with Silver River being my favorite. Silver River (1948) was directed by the wonderful Raoul Walsh and also stars Thomas Mitchell, Tom D’Andrea (love him in this role… well, actually, I love him in everything), and Bruce Bennett.

You can find Silver River on dvd (Amazon link). I absolutely love it.

Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn as Maid Marion and Robin Hood (Perfection!)

Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn in The Adventures of Robin HoodOlivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) was directed by the wonderful Micahel Curtiz and is (without question) one of the most iconic and entertaining films ever made. The cast includes Olivia de Havilland, Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Patric Knowles, Eugene Pallette, and Alan Hale.

This is one of those wonderful films that, somehow, seems more enjoyable each time you watch it.

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn in Silver River

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn… if these two names don’t conjure up entertainment for a classic film lover, I’m not sure what names would! They’re two of my personal favorites and one of my favorite movie “onscreen” couples. They were wonderful together – so much chemistry and seemed to love working together.

Silver River was one of the films they made together and it’s a great one. The 1948 Western was directed by Raul Walsh and also stars Thomas Mitchell (always wonderful), Bruce Bennett, and Tom D’Andrea (LOVE him in this role).

You can find Silver River on dvd (Amazon link).

Maureen O’Hara and Errol Flynn, Against All Flags (I Love this Swashbuckling Film so Much!)

April 26, 2022 By Joi

Maureen O'Hara, Against All FlagsMaureen O’Hara

Against All Flags isn’t just one of my favorite Maureen O’Hara movies and favorite Swashbuckling films, it’s also one of my favorite of Errol Flynn’s performances. He’s wonderful in this role. He plays his character with wonderful layers and takes full advantage of the opportunity to show off his comedic skills.

Errol Flynn was one of those stars who was equally wonderful with drama and comedy. Many stars (in spite of possibly being great with both) were better with one of the other. For example, I think Cary Grant was better with comedy.  I recently saw two Errol Flynn films (both re-watches) back-to-back, Silver River and Against All Flags and was struck by his brilliance in both genres.

Maureen O’Hara was, of course, also brilliant in all genres and she’s wonderful (as always) in this swashbuckler. She was such a beautiful actress, too, and it’s on full, colorful display in this film!

You can find Against All Flags on dvd and Blu-ray (Amazon link).

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn in Silver River

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn in Silver River

Ann Sheridan and Errol Flynn are, individually, two of my favorite stars. They’re also, combined, one of my favorite movie couples. I love their chemistry a great deal and, personally, think she made as wonderful a leady lady for him as Olivia de Havilland did… which is, of course, absolutely saying something!

Silver River was directed by Raul Walsh and also stars Thomas Mitchell (always wonderful), Bruce Bennett, and Tom D’Andrea (LOVE him in this role).

You can find Silver River on dvd (Amazon link). It’s a very, very good Western with an outstanding cast.

Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

Iconic film. Iconic actor. Iconic actress. Iconic film couple. Sums it up pretty well, I’d say… and yet it STILL doesn’t say enough about the magic of Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland as Robin Hood and Maid Marion in the wonderful The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Directed by the wonderful Micahel Curtiz, the legendary film also stars Basil Rathbone, Claude Rains, Patric Knowles, Eugene Pallette, and Alan Hale.

If you haven’t seen this fun and colorful film, it’s the perfect time for a revisit!

Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn: The Adventures of Robin Hood

Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn, The Adventures of Robin HoodOlivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn

There are many reasons to love The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938, directed by Michael Curtiz) but the main two reasons are pictured above. Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn made movie magic every time they teamed up and this film, their third of eight collaborations, is certainly no exception.

The only thing I dislike about the entire film is Errol’s wig. I realize it was necessary for the character, I suppose… but each time I watch this one, it takes me a while to keep from getting distracted by it!

To be fair, though, I’m pretty easily distracted. Now what were we talking about??

Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn: Dodge City (1939)

September 19, 2021 By Joi

Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn, Dodge City

Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn

Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn were one of the all-time GREAT movie couples. The talent was off the charts and the chemistry was out of this world. One of my favorite of their movies is Dodge City (1939), a film that really doesn’t get nearly enough attention!

The western was directed by the great Michael Curtiz and also stars Ann Sheridan, Bruce Cabot, and Alan Hale.

You can find Dodge City on Amazon (link to the dvd) or watch the movie on Prime Video.

Welcome to Hollywood Yesterday!

Ann Sheridan, It All Came True

Ann Sheridan
My name is Joi (“Joy”) and I created Hollywood Yesterday as my personal tribute to Old Hollywood. It’s my effort to help keep the stars from Old Hollywood, Classic Television, and Old Radio Shows alive and shining forever. Old Hollywood was positively magical and I see no reason for the magic to ever die.

Be warned, I am (by nature) overtly positive, I never take anything too seriously, I say extraordinary so often you’d think I invented the word, and I overuse exclamation points to distraction. I’m perpetually over-caffeinated.. we’ll blame that.

The Old Hollywood & Classic TV Pictures of the Day are published as regularly as possible. If I miss a few days, please just know that the husband, daughters, sons-in-law, grandbabies, and/or my cats were demanding my attention. I’ll be honest, nothing comes before any of them! Not even Maureen O’Hara or Henry Fonda.

Priorities, y’all.

Olivia de Havilland

Olivia de Havilland, The Adventures of Robin Hood

My main goal with Hollywood Yesterday is to keep the names, faces, and films of the stars that mean so much to me shining brightly. When I’m guilty of focusing more time on my personal favorites (such as Olivia de Havilland) than other stars, I hope you’ll forgive me. I am, by all indications, very human!

Also, please know that I try to keep my posts (except for book reviews) short and to the point, so you can enjoy the pictures, grab the information, and get back to your life. I don’t appreciate anything that’s overly wordy, so I don’t want to do that to others. For better or worse, I write as I talk, so if you ever feel like you’re reading the words of someone who’s a cross between Lucy Ricardo, Daisy Duck, and a Jerry Lewis character, that’s just because you are!

Wait. What did I just admit to??

Barbara Stanwyck Quotes

Another personal absolute favorite of mine is Barbara Stanwyck. Not only was she beautiful and outrageously talented, she was exceptionally bright, charismatic, and colorful. This growing collection of Barbara Stanwyck Quotes will give you an idea of just how colorful she was!
